Este libro de Julio Pinto Vallejos examina uno de los problemas más atractivos y problemáticos de la historia latinoamericana a partir de la crisis del orden colonial y los consiguientes procesos de independencia que se desarrollaron. Su foco está puesto en los dilemas, los desafíos y las estrategias que desplegaron los grupos dirigentes regionales para afrontar la construcción social de los nuevos estados y legitimarlos. Este conflictivo proceso es abordado a través de dos claves analíticas e interpretativas que permiten exponer sugestivas conclusiones. Por un lado, y a tono con los enfoques más renovadores desarrollados en los últimos años por la historiografía latinoamericanista, dando cuenta de la presencia e incidencia que tuvieron los sectores populares y, en particular, sus diversas y cambiantes relaciones con los liderazgos políticos emergentes. Por otro lado, adoptando una audaz estrategia comparativa que le permite explorar los procesos de "construcción social del Estado" en tres experiencias históricas distintas y contemporáneas, las de Chile, Perú y Argentina y, en especial, la de Buenos Aires. De este modo, el libro ofrece una nueva e incitante lectura sobre un problema que no ha dejado de atraer a los historiadores de América Latina, las relaciones entre los "caudillos" y el amplio y diverso universo de los "plebeyos". Julio Pinto Vallejos es historiador chileno especializado en temas de historia social y política. Obtuvo su doctorado en la Universidad de Yale, EE.UU., y desarrolló gran parte de su carrera en la Universidad de Santiago de Chile. Entre sus obras figuran la Historia contemporánea de Chile, 5 vols. (1998-2002), escrita junto con Gabriel Salazar; ¿Chilenos Todos? La construcción social de la nación, 1810-1840 (2009), en coautoría con Verónica Valdivia; y Luis Emilio Recabarren, una biografía histórica (2013); todas publicadas por LOM Ediciones. En 2016 obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Historia otorgado por el Estado de Chile.
