Nonsmooth Lyapunov Analysis in Finite and Infinite Dimensions provides helpful tools for the treatment of a broad class of dynamical systems that are governed, not only by ordinary differential equations but also by partial and functional differential equations. Existing Lyapunov constructions are extended to discontinuous systems—those with variable structure and impact—by the involvement of nonsmooth Lyapunov functions. The general theoretical presentation is illustrated by control-related applications; the nonsmooth Lyapunov construction is particularly applied to the tuning of sliding-mode controllers in the presence of mismatched disturbances and to orbital stabilization of the bipedal gate. The nonsmooth construction is readily extendible to the control and identification of distributed-parameter and time-delay systems. The first part of the book outlines the relevant fundamentals of benchmark models and mathematical basics. The second concentrates on the construction of nonsmooth Lyapunov functions. Part III covers design and applications material. This book is primarily a research monograph that presents in a unified man ner some recent research on a class of hybrid dynamical systems (HDS). The book is intended both for researchers and advanced postgraduate stu dents working in the areas of control engineering, theoretical computer science, or applied mathematics and with an interest in the emerging field of hybrid dynamical systems. The book assumes competence in the basic mathematical techniques of modern control theory. The material presented in this book derives from a period of fruitful research collaboration between the authors that began in 1994 and is still ongoing. Some of the material contained herein has appeared as isolated results in journal papers and conference proceedings. This work presents this material in an integrated and coherent manner and also presents many new results. Much of the material arose from joint work with students and colleagues, and the authors wish to acknowledge the major contributions made by Ian Petersen, Efstratios Skafidas, Valery Ugrinovskii, David Cook, Iven Mareels, and Bill Moran. There is currently no precise definition of a hybrid dynamical system; however, in broad terms it is a dynamical system that involves a mixture of discrete-valued and continuous-valued variables. Since the early 1990s, a bewildering array of results have appeared under the umbrella of HDS, ranging from the analysis of elementary on-off control systems to sophis ticated mathematical logic-based descriptions of large real-time software systems.

The theory of dynamic games is very rich in nature and very much alive! If the reader does not already agree with this statement, I hope he/she will surely do so after having consulted the contents of the current volume. The activities which fall under the heading of 'dynamic games' cannot easily be put into one scientific discipline. On the theoretical side one deals with differential games, difference games (the underlying models are described by differential, respec tively difference equations) and games based on Markov chains, with determin istic and stochastic games, zero-sum and nonzero-sum games, two-player and many-player games - all under various forms of equilibria. On the practical side, one sees applications to economics (stimulated by the recent Nobel prize for economics which went to three prominent scientists in game theory), biology, management science, and engineering. The contents of this volume are primarily based on selected presentations made at the Sixth International Symposium on Dynamic Games and Applica tions, held in St Jovite, Quebec, Canada, 13-15 July 1994. Every paper that appears in this volume has passed through a stringent reviewing process, as is the case with publications for archival technical journals. This conference, as well as its predecessor which was held in Grimentz, 1992, took place under the auspices of the International Society of Dynamic Games (ISDG), established in 1990. The causal problem has become topical once again. While we are no longer causalists or believers in the universal truth of the causal principle we continue to think of causes and effects, as well as of causal and noncausal relations among them.
