Intrauterine growth restriction in the human, the origin of many serious medical, ethical, socioeconomic and humanitarian issues, still needs in-depth studies. The current volume presents the latest research results and offers detailed discussions on clinical care. The term small for gestational age (SGA) is defined and manifestations of prenatal growth retardation and its etiology are described. Special emphasis is placed on the role of genetic defects, in particular in the IGF/GH axis. Besides, not only the immediate consequences for SGA neonates and their clinical care are examined, but also possible sequelae in childhood. A study of utmost importance considers the neurological and intellectual consequences for SGA children. It is further revealed that fetal growth restriction can adversely affect health well into adulthood, and increase the risk for type 2 diabetes. Finally, interesting insights into the causes and consequences of low birth weight in developing countries are provided. This publication is a must for pediatricians, neonatologists, obstetricians and endocrinologists, as well as anyone interested in embryology, genetics, diabetes, clinical nutrition, molecular biology and neuroendocrinology.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or fetal growth restriction is a condition in which the fetus does not grow normally in the womb during pregnancy. This condition may be caused due to maternal, fetal, or placental complications. Certain important causes include placenta abnormalities, high blood pressure in mother, infections, smoking or alcohol abuse, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, blood clotting disorder, etc. One of the major consequences of IUGR is that a baby is born weighing less than 90 percent of other babies at the same gestational age. IUGR is broadly classified into asymmetrical IUGR and symmetrical IUGR. A decreased oxygen or nutrient supply to the fetus during the third trimester of pregnancy due to placental insufficiency is called asymmetrical IUGR. Symmetrical IUGR, also known as global growth restriction, shows that the fetus has grown slowly during the pregnancy, and has been affected from the start. This book is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about intrauterine growth restriction. It outlines the aetiology and management of this medical condition in detail. Those in search of information to further their knowledge will be greatly assisted by this book.

Developmental programming is a rapidly advancing discipline of great importance to basic scientists and health professionals alike. This text integrates, for the first time, contributions from world experts to explore the role of the placenta in developmental programming. The book considers the materno-fetal supply line, and how perturbations of placental development impact on its functional capacity. Chapters examine ways in which environmental, immunological and vascular insults regulate expression of conventional and imprinted genes, along with their impact on placental shape and size, transport, metabolism and endocrine function. Research in animal models is integrated with human clinical and epidemiological data, and questions for future research are identified. Transcripts of discussions between the authors allow readers to engage with controversial issues. Essential reading for researchers in placental biology and developmental programming, as well as specialists and trainees in the wider field of reproductive medicine.
