Non-Newtonian properties on bubble dynamics and cavitation are fundamentally different from those of Newtonian fluids. The most significant effect arises from the dramatic increase in viscosity of polymer solutions in an extensional flow, such as that generated about a spherical bubble during its growth or collapse phase. In addition, many biological fluids, such as blood, synovial fluid, and saliva, have non-Newtonian properties and can display significant viscoelastic behaviour. This monograph elucidates general aspects of bubble dynamics and cavitation in non-Newtonian fluids and applies them to the fields of biomedicine and bioengineering. In addition it presents many examples from the process industries. The field is strongly interdisciplinary and the numerous disciplines involve have and will continue to overlook and reinvent each others’ work. This book helps researchers to think intuitively about the diverse physics of these systems, to attempt to bridge the various communities involved, and to convey the interest, elegance, and variety of physical phenomena that manifest themselves on the micrometer and microsecond scales.

Flow cavitation is substantially altered, both at inception and during subsequent dynamics, by the addition of small amounts of water-soluble polymer. Theoretical and experimental single-bubble systems developed here trace the shape of a bubble as it is influenced by a volume change of the cavity, the rheology of the surrounding fluid, the presence of a solid wall, and/or an imposed external flow. The theoretical formulation pertains to a bubble in a fluid which is infinite in extent and contains no barriers or interfaces apart from the bubble surface. An external flow can be imposed, imparting a stress history. In addition, a spherical bubble profile, obtained from present experiments or theories, dictates a volume change and drives the non-sphericities. (Author).

Conditions for bubble cavitation and behavior in non-Newtonian fluids have numerous applications in physical sciences, engineering and medicine. Non-Newtonian fluids are a rich, but relatively undeveloped area of fluid dynamics, with phenomena from diffusion to bubble growth just beginning to receive attention. In the course of examining bubble cavitation, it became apparent that the random particle motion responsible for determining potential bubble formation had not been researched. As cavitation bubbles collapse, they deform into a variety of non-spherical shapes. Due to the complex dynamics and the radial focus of current equations on bubble behavior, no accepted model has yet emerged. This work explores the behavior using numerical methods on both fluid and bubble models to examine this system from different prospectives, culminating in a time-fractional, power-law Burger’s type equation showing bubble formation under these conditions.

A review of the current research of cavitation in fluid films is presented. Phenomena and experimental observations include gaseous cavitation, vapor cavitation, and gas entrainment. Cavitation in flooded, starved, and dynamically loaded journal bearings, as well as squeeze films are reviewed. Observations of cavitation damage in bearings and the possibility of cavitation between parallel plates with microasperities were discussed. The transcavity fluid transport process, meniscus motion and geometry or form of the film during rupture, and reformation were summarized. Performance effects were related to heat transfer models in the cavitated region and hysteresis influence on rotor dynamics coefficients. A number of cavitation algorithms was presented together with solution procedures using the finite difference and finite element methods. Although Newtonian fluids were assumed in most of the discussions, the effect of non-Newtonian fluids on cavitation was also discussed. Brewe, D. E. (Editor) and Ball, J. H. (Editor) and Khonsari, M. A review of topics relevant to Newtonian and non-Newtonian bubble and droplet dynamics, together with an extensive bibliography, are presented. This review forms the basis for an assessment of theoretical and experimental studies of nonspherical bubble growth and collapse in non-Newtonian fluids. In the report, which is adapted from a proposition for a research dissertation, we show the difference between extremes of inertia-dominated and viscosity-dominated bubble dynamics under conditions of interest. Comparison with published data shows that the effect of inertia is expected to be important, even in non-Newtonian systems. Finally, the goals of the research are delineated, and possible theoretical and experimental approaches are outlined. (Author).

Hydraulic cavitation and its effects have been reported to be substantially inhibited and subsequently suppressed by the addition of minute quantities of water-soluble polymer. Modelling the growth and collapse of a single cavitation bubble in water has been established as the fundamental theoretical approach to understanding this phenomenon. Laser-induced cavitation has been developed as a technique for the experimental investigation and confirmation of predicted spherical and nonspherical bubble dynamics in quiescent viscous fluids. The present experimental research has sought to form a link between previous theoretical and experimental efforts. Optical cavitation has been used to create model cavitation bubbles nonintrusively within a fluid undergoing a steady shear flow history. The flow-induced deformation of these single bubbles was recorded and analyzed. Originator supplied keywords include: cavitation, rheology, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, bubbles, nonspherical, viscoelastic liquids, polymers.

Cavitation And Tension In Liquids written by D. H. Trevena and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Art categories.

Cavitation is the process of formation of voids and clouds of bubbles in liquids under tension. Cavitation and the ability of liquids to withstand tension are therefore topics of considerable importance in a number of disciplines in pure and applied science. The monograph begins with a historical survey of early cavitation research which started with the pioneering work of F M L Donny and Marcelin Berthelot. The theoretical and experimental background to cavitation and the tensile strength of liquids - static and dynamic stressing of liquids and bubble studies - is then discussed before the practical consequences are considered. It is these 'applied' areas in which cavitation has most bearing on everyday life: engineers and marine architects must have an appreciation of the effects of cavitation on hydraulic machinery and ships' propellers while the cavitation properties of the liquid coolant can play a large part in the design and safety of fast nuclear reactors. In the medical field cavitation effects are met in joint cracking, decompression sickness and blood flow. The conclusion of the book, and a survey of the present state of knowledge, are presented by Professor H N V Temperley, who has had a lifetime's experience of cavitation research. This monograph will serve as a complete introduction to cavitation and tension in liquids for students of physics, engineering and chemical engineering. Researchers and teachers will find it a handy reference source. other_titles
