Além de poeta de primeira grandeza, Cecília Meireles foi professora. Formada pela Escola Normal (Instituto de Educação) do Rio de Janeiro, começou a exercer, em 1917, o magistério primário em escolas oficiais do então Distrito. Preocupada com o estado da educação no Brasil, sempre militou na área, participando ativamente dos debates acerca das reformas de ensino projetadas na década de 1930. Naqueles instantes decisivos da história brasileira, Cecília passou a colaborar para a seção que o Diário de notícias reservava diariamente para assuntos relacionados a educação. A poetisa disserta com clareza e profundidade nestes textos sobre temas como política educacional, currículo escolar, métodos pedagógicos, espaço escolar, a formação dos professores e suas atribuições em sala de aula, os desafios do ensino público, o movimento da Escola Nova, as particularidades da infância e da adolescência, o papel da família nos processos de aprendizagem, literatura infantil, entre outros. Cumpre destacar o caráter de escritos de intervenção que estes textos possuem, ao pautarem e proporem soluções para impasses candentes na época e que ainda nos são consideravelmente familiares, demandando a atenção de todos que se interessam pelos desafios do ofício de ensinar.
