A literatura de testemunho se caracteriza por relatos biográficos que descrevem acontecimentos traumáticos dos quais os autores foram vítimas. Não é difícil concordarmos que esses autores dispõem da memória sobre tal acontecimento, entretanto o trauma é justamente aquilo que não forma traço mnêmico e representação psíquica, conteúdos essenciais à formação da memória na perspectiva freudiana. Como, então, pensar a memória dos acontecimentos traumáticos? Tendo isso em vista, Diego Frichs Antonello amplia a noção de memória apresentada por Freud na Carta 52, fazendo uma distinção entre traços mnêmicos e impressões para, com isso, apresentar a memória referente aos conteúdos representativos e outra relativa aos elementos traumáticos. As impressões são os primeiros registros mnêmicos do psiquismo, anteriores à formação dos traços mnêmicos, portanto fora do sistema inconsciente e do alcance do princípio de prazer. Diante da impossibilidade de ligação que caracteriza o trauma, as impressões permaneceriam congeladas no aparato psíquico, apresentando-se de forma literal no psiquismo do sujeito traumatizado, motivo pelo qual os autores da literatura de testemunho enfatizam que as suas memórias referentes ao trauma são muito mais vívidas se comparadas com as demais. Antonello, ademais, faz uma releitura do conceito de figurabilidade, que o permite explicar como as impressões não ligadas encontram um meio de expressão no psiquismo. Figurar consiste em criar uma imagem sensível onde nada existia anteriormente. Apoiados em Sándor Ferenczi, que trouxe uma importante contribuição à teoria e à clínica do trauma, principalmente com os conceitos de autoclivagem narcísica e desmentido, e em uma análise de vários autores da literatura de testemunho, compreendemos como o eu se defende e, mesmo, cria alternativas de sobrevivência diante do trauma. Tal proposta ajuda a pensar a escrita de testemunho como uma saída para o trauma que não passa, necessariamente, pelos processos representativos indicados na teoria freudiana. Nessa perspectiva, o testemunho de acontecimentos traumáticos nasce diretamente das impressões, consistindo em uma narrativa literal, isenta de entrelinhas e também uma forma criativa de lidar com o traumático.
