Quel bilan peut-on établir de cent années de mission catholique au Mali ? Tel est l'objet de ce livre de Pierre Diarra, où il révèle de solides qualités d'historien, d'anthropologue et de théologien de la mission. Ce livre est un constat courageux, lucide, fondé sur une analyse précise des données historiques. Le dépouillement des archives des congrégations missionnaires et surtout celui de nombreux diaires lui permettent d'appréhender les réalités quotidiennes : aussi bien dans le domaine de la santé, de l'instruction, du rôle des femmes que dans celui des relations entre missionnaires et administrateurs coloniaux. La précision des notes, les citations de documents inédits sur la colonisation puis sur le clergé malien, attestent de la richesse de l'information réunie par l'auteur. Au Soudan puis au Mali, la très grande majorité de la population, 92 %, est musulmane. Le reste, qualifié d'animiste et de traditionnel, a constitué le champ ouvert à l'évangélisation, mais ne représente que 2,5 %. Ce qui explique le choix missions de s'implanter parmi les peuples résistants à l'islam, à l'instar des Bwa qui ont accueilli assez largement le catholicisme. Hostiles à l'Islam, il faut se demander pourquoi ils se convertissent. A cette question, complexe mais fondamentale, Pierre Diarra apporte plusieurs réponses. L'auteur tente aussi de comprendre les diverses attitudes de l'Eglise face aux problèmes socio-économiques de la période de l'indépendance. S'il note le caractère ethnique du catholicisme au Mali, source d'un certain désengagement des nouveaux chrétiens et de leur mise à l'écart de la vie politique, faut-il pour autant parler d'échec ? Se fondant sur la conception de la vie dans l'initiation coutumière et faisant sienne l'apport de la sagesse traditionnelle, il esquisse une théologie de la mission qui insiste sur la gratuité du christianisme mais, en même temps, implique une responsabilité des chrétiens du Mali, appelés à une action politique et sociale. Il faut saluer la parution d'un tel livre qui, au-delà de l'exemple particulier du Mali, informe, questionne, suggère de nombreuses pistes de réflexion sur l'inculturation de la foi chrétienne en Afrique au sud du Sahara.
