Au sein de « la littérature-monde » qui, depuis quelques décennies, surgit dans les cinq continents, le roman-monde a rencontré un succès des plus spectaculaires : tirages impressionnants, traductions systématiques en de multiples langues, attribution régulière de prix littéraires (Booker, Médicis, Nobel...). En retenant plus de cent récits, cet essai critique se propose de reconstituer la genèse de ce nouveau genre littéraire. Les premiers textes pris en considération ont été les récits de voyage rapportés par les navigateurs et les explorateurs qui, depuis l’Antiquité, ont parcouru le monde en tentant d’en dresser les cartes. La lecture de ces textes séminaux a, tout naturellement, incité nombre de romanciers modernes à se lancer, plus ou moins métaphoriquement, à la découverte des terres encore mal connues. Préoccupés au plus haut point par les problèmes de forme, ces romanciersmonde affichent avec fierté une maîtrise impeccable des langues des colonisateurs, qu’ils considèrent maintenant comme des « butins de guerre » (F. Fanon). Ce faisant, ils s’octroient avec jubilation la possibilité de se livrer à des expérimentations qui libèrent leur parole : réécriture ironique de certains textes canoniques (comme Robinson Crusoe de Defoe ou Au coeur des ténèbres de Conrad), analyses très poussées de leurs statuts ambigus de « bâtards internationaux », intégrations spectaculaires de mots vernaculaires, utilisations systématiques des parlers populaires, glorification du discours poétique ancestral, adoption du « réalisme magique » sud-américain et de son écriture de l’imaginaire, etc. Motivés à la fois par un vibrant militantisme sociopolitique et une profonde adhésion humaniste à l’esthétique de la Relation (É. Glissant), ces romanciers sont parvenus à imposer une littérature qui donne enfin, à l’Autre et à l’Ailleurs, la place qui leur revient dans ce « nouveau Nouveau monde ». Denise Coussy, professeur honoraire de l’Université du Mans, a consacré de nombreuses études aux « nouvelles littératures » de l’Afrique, des Antilles, de l’Inde ou de l’Australie. En 2000, elle a publié La littérature africaine moderne au sud du Sahara et, en 2004, Le roman indien de langue anglaise aux Éditions Karthala.

City Government in Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor examines the social and administrative transformation of Greek society within the early Roman empire, assessing the extent to which the numerous changes in Greek cities during the imperial period ought to be attributed to Roman influence. The topic is crucial to our understanding of the foundations of Roman imperial power because Greek speakers comprised the empire's second largest population group and played a vital role in its administration, culture, and social life. This book elucidates the transformation of Greek society in this period from a local point of view, mostly through the study of local sources such as inscriptions and coins. By providing information on public activities, education, family connections, and individual careers, it shows the extent of and geographical variation in Greek provincial reaction to the changes accompanying the establishment of Roman rule. In general, new local administrative and social developments during the period were most heavily influenced by traditional pre-Roman practices, while innovations were few and of limited importance. Concentrating on the province of Asia, one of the most urbanized Greek-speaking provinces of Rome, this work demonstrates that Greek local administration remained diverse under the Romans, while at the same time local Greek nobility gradually merged with the Roman ruling class into one imperial elite. This conclusion interprets the interference of Roman authorities in local administration as a form of interaction between different segments of the imperial elite, rejecting the old explanation of such interference as a display of Roman control over subjects.
