Colonel S. Bassett French, was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on March 31, 1820. He was educated at the Classical School of George Halson in Norfolk and at Hampton-Sidney College. He studied law with Robert Y. Conrad of Winchester, Va. and was licensed to practice law in 1840. Colonel French was Commonwealth Attorney in the Circuit Court of Chesterfield for several years and was Assistant Clerk of the House of Delegates of Virginia, being on very intimate terms with the distinguished and able legislators and statesmen of Virginia during those years, a fact which these memoirs clearly confirm. He was Secretary to Governor John Letcher, by whom he was appointed as special agent to the Confederacy, and in this capacity he was with Lee and Jackson in the Army of Northern Virginia, 1861-1865, bearing the Commission of Extra Aide-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief, a copy of which is herewith presented. These memoirs give us a keen insight to the characters of Lee, Jackson, Stuart, A. P. Hill and others not found in the writings of many authors who have published their fond recollections of those great “Virginia” soldiers and generals. The stories about them will be cherished. Revealed here, too, is the character of the writer, Colonel “Chester,” “the jauntiest little man (130 pounds) in the Army of Northern Virginia, as Dr. Todd said of him when the train to Richmond was captured by the Yankees at Ashland. His escapades and escapes (he always escaped), his fondness for fine feeding, his rebukes from Lee and Jackson, his heart-warming associations with men and women in the experiences of war and the wit and wisdom of his active mind excite our admiration and thrill our hearts and souls. When the record ends and the book is closed, one must stop for a while and muse, “Surely, here was an unusual man.”

“This comprehensively researched, well-written book represents the definitive account of Robert E. Lee’s triumph over Union leader John Pope in the summer of 1862. . . . Lee’s strategic skills, and the capabilities of his principal subordinates James Longstreet and Stonewall Jackson, brought the Confederates onto the field of Second Manassas at the right places and times against a Union army that knew how to fight, but not yet how to win.”—Publishers Weekly

In the shadows of the quiet mountain towns of Western Maryland, strange creatures are said to lurk in the woods while phantoms wander the foothills. The Hagerstown clock tower is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a young artist killed during the Civil War, while the low summit of South Mountain was once host to a mysterious spell-caster, the Wizard Zittle. Farther west, tales of legendary hunter Meshach Browning echo among the Allegany Mountains while visitors to Deep Creek Lake may feel the chilling presence of monks who never left their former monastery. From the 1909 hoax of the monstrous Snallygaster that terrorized the Middletown Valley to the doglike Dwayyo that was spotted near Frederick in 1965, local historian Susan Fair rounds up the bizarre beasts, odd characters and unsolved mysteries that color the legends and lore of Western Maryland.

“Brilliant . . . really gives one a sense of what it took to both lead and run an army in the Civil War. . . . Superb.” —Chris Kolakowski, author of The Virginia Campaigns: March–August 1862 In From Arlington to Appomattox, Charles Knight does for Robert E. Lee and students of the Civil War what E. B. Long’s Civil War Day by Day did for our understanding of the conflict as a whole. This is not another Lee biography, but it is every bit as valuable as one. We know Lee rode out to meet the survivors of Pickett’s Charge and accept blame for the defeat, that he tried to lead the Texas Brigade in a counterattack to save the day at the Wilderness, and took a tearful ride from Wilmer McLean’s house at Appomattox. But where was Lee and what was he doing when the spotlight of history failed to illuminate him? Focusing on what he was doing day by day offers an entirely different appreciation for Lee. Readers will come away with a fresh sense of his struggles, both personal and professional, and discover many things about Lee for the first time through his own correspondence and papers. From Arlington to Appomattox is a tremendous contribution to the literature of the Civil War. “Knight’s study will become the standard reference work on Lee’s daily wartime experiences.” —R. E. L. Krick, author of Staff Officers in Gray “A staggering work of scholarship.” —Jeffry D. Wert, author of A Glorious Army: Robert E. Lee’s Triumph, 1862–1863 "A pleasure to read.” —Michael C. Hardy, author of General Lee’s Immortals “Keeps the reader engaged.” —Journal of America's Military Past
