In this research the effectiveness of physical modeling of in situ flushing with water and a surfactant solution was evaluated using a geotechnical centrifuge. The centrifugal experiments consist of two parts: transport of diesel through fine grain soils and remediation of diesel contaminated soil. First, 7.74 m3 of diesel per meter (width) was infiltrated into a 15 m thick prototype layer of fine grain unsaturated soil. Then contaminated soil was remediated by continuous flushing with two liquids (water and 1% (wt/v) aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant) while subjecting the sample to 50 g acceleration. Effectiveness of soil remediation by flushing with 1% (wt/v) SDS surfactant was investigated in this research and compared that to flushing with water without additives. The total volume of injected remediation solution over 130 prototype days was equal to 4.20 times the pore volume of the soil between two barrier walls. The results showed that when surfactant solution was used, the elutriate flow was downward congruent with the remediation goal. On the other hand, when water without surfactant was used, the contamination plume expanded in the lateral direction which exacerbated the situation. The test results also showed a considerable reduction (76.3%) of diesel content in soil after flushing with SDS solution after 130 days of flushing. Based on the test results it was concluded that the geotechnical centrifuge and the described experimental procedure could be used as a design tool for implementation and evaluating the effectiveness of in situ surfactant-enhanced flushing remediation systems.

Sustainable development is an area that has world-wide appeal, from developed industrialized countries to the developing world. Development of innovative technologies to achieve sustainability is being addressed by many European countries, the USA and also China and India. The need for chemical processes to be safe, compact, flexible, energy efficient, and environmentally benign and conducive to the rapid commercialization of new products poses new challenges for chemical engineers. This book examines the newest technologies for sustainable development in chemical engineering, through careful analysis of the technical aspects, and discussion of the possible fields of industrial development. The book is broad in its coverage, and is divided into four sections: Energy Production, covering renewable energies, innovative solar technologies, cogeneration plants, and smart grids Process Intensification, describing why it is important in the chemical and petrochemical industry, the engineering approach, and nanoparticles as a smart technology for bioremediation Bio-based Platform Chemicals, including the production of bioethanol and biodiesel, bioplastics production and biodegradability, and biosurfactants Soil and Water Remediation, covering water management and re-use, and soil remediation technologies Throughout the book there are case studies and examples of industrial processes in practice.

Oil spillage has a major impact on the ecosystem into which it is released pollutants into crops and aquacultures through contamination of the groundwater and soils which is one of the most concerns in term of sustainable development. In this study remediation of diesel contaminated soil in the column with 15 cm height and 4m diameter was investigated. Soil column was contaminated with diesel in amount of 10 000 and 20 000 ppm. After 72 hours washing of soil with SDS with concentration of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 was started. For study the effect of the washing solution pH, all tests were repeated with 4, 7, 9 and 11 values for pH. Also for study the effect of surfactant on soil remediation, soil was washed with water without surfactant. All tests were continued up to 10 pore volume and the trend of remediation and permeability of soil during the test was investigated. Results showed that in all states the quantity of remediation for acidic states is very low and efficiency of remediation when using only water is about (1:3) of maximum amount. For soil with initial contaminant concentration of 10 000 ppm the maximum efficiency is for surfactant in the concentration of 0.3 and pH = 11 and for soil with initial contamination amount of 20 000 ppm the maximum efficiency is for surfactant in the concentration of 0.1 and pH = 11. By increasing the amount of surfactant concentration, the permeability of soil decreased and in pH = 11 the amount of permeability is maximum. With increasing initial contamination quantity rate of increasing of remediation and permeability decreased. Consequently in the low level of contamination the effect of washing solution pH value in soil remediation and permeability is more in comparing with high level of contamination.

Surfactant-aided soil remediation technologies, such as surfactant-aided soil washing and in situ surfactant-enhanced sorption zone systems, have received considerable research attention recently in remediating hydrophobic organic compound (HOC) contamination. Soil particle-size dependent sorption of surfactants and its effect on HOCs partitioning within soil-water-surfactant systems, although critical in understanding the mechanisms by which the HOCs are removed by these systems, has not been studied well. This dissertation systematically investigated the sorption behavior of three surfactants with different charge properties (TritonRTM X-100 (TX), a nonionic surfactant; linear alkylbenzene sodium (LAS); benzalkonium chloride (BC), a cationic surfactant) and two HOCs, represented by the two most commonly used hydrophobic pesticides (atrazine and diuron), onto soils and soil primary size fractions (clay (2mum), silt (2 & sim;50mum), and sand (50mum) size fractions). Special attention was paid to the effect of surfactant sorption on pesticide sorption and desorption. As relevant to HOC fate and transport in soils, soil colloids transport and deposition within porous media was also examined in this study.
