CESURA - Rivista è espressione delle posizioni critiche e storiografiche del Centro Europeo di Studi su Umanesimo e Rinascimento Aragonese – CESURA, nella sua duplice configurazione di associazione e di centro interuniversitario internazionale. Riflette la vocazione all’interdisciplinarietà e all’integrazione di diverse discipline (in particolare letteratura, filologia, linguistica, storia, arte) dimostrata negli incontri seminariali degli ultimi anni: nel più alto sguardo prospettico che li ha caratterizzati, l’espressione letteraria, la testimonianza documentale, la rappresentazione artistica si sono sempre integrate e la dimensione artistico-culturale non si è mai separata da quella ideologica e dottrinale. La vocazione della rivista, dunque, è riprodurre sinteticamente l’intrinseca varietà e la coesa interazione dei modelli e delle attestazioni storico-culturali dell’Umanesimo e del Rinascimento che si generarono nel Regno dell’Italia meridionale e nella Corona d’Aragona. Il primo numero è aperto da un Editoriale di Guido Cappelli e Fulvio Delle Donne sulle finalità e sull’impegno metodologico della Rivista. La sezione Confronti (monografica), che caratterizza la Rivista, in questo primo numero è dedicata a: Pontano e la guerra: il De bello Neapolitano nel suo contesto storico, ideologico e letterario. Raccoglie i contributi di Francesco Storti, Davide Morra, Fulvio Delle Donne, Guido Cappelli e Antonietta Iacono. La sezione dedicata agli Studi contiene articoli di Antonio Biscione, Eduard Juncosa Bonet, Alessio Russo e Giovanni De Vita. La sezione Testimonianze e documenti contiene una “spigolatura” documentaria di Biagio Nuciforo. La sezione Letture contiene recensioni di Gema Belia Capilla Aledón (per Francesco Cacopardo); James Hankins (per Giovanni De Vita); Juan Alfonso de Benavente, ed. F. Bautista & P. M. [Italiano]: La signoria feudale del Mezzogiorno e nel Mezzogiorno è un tema storiografico di lunga durata, che in anni recenti ha ripreso nuova linfa. Il ripensamento delle categorie interpretative del fenomeno signorile basso-medievale, una serie di approfondite analisi delle società rurali tardo-medievali e dei caratteri dei poteri feudali, le circostanziate ricostruzioni delle loro forme di amministrazione e di gestione, le indagini sulla semantica delle rappresentazioni e sul loro grado di pervasività hanno consentito il superamento di quel paradigma storiografico di una feudalità regnicola omogenea al proprio interno e monolitica nei suoi orientamenti. Inserendosi in questo dibattito, il volume propone un caso di studio: la signoria degli Orsini di Nola tra la Terra di Lavoro e il Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Attraverso l’esame di una varietà di fonti (documentarie, narrative, iconografiche e architettoniche), con particolare attenzione al secondo Quattrocento, l’Autore riflette sulle forme del radicamento del potere orsiniano, sui suoi rapporti con le élites della contea, sui processi di autorappresentazione. In tal modo egli offre un rilevante contributo allo studio dei signori e delle corti signorili nel Regno di Sicilia./[English]: The feudal lordship of Southern Italy and in Southern Italy is a long-lasting historiographic theme, which has taken on new life in recent years. The rethinking of the interpretative categories of the medieval lordship, a series of in-depth analyses of the late-medieval rural societies and the characteristics of the feudal powers, the detailed reconstructions of their forms of administration and management, the investigations into the semantics of representations have allowed the overcoming of that historiographic paradigm of a Southern baronial class which was internally homogeneous and monolithic in its orientations. Aiming to follow this path, this book puts a case study forth: the lordship of the Orsini, counts of Nola, between Terra di Lavoro and Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Using a wide variety of sources (documentary, literary, iconographic and architectural), the author reconstructs how the Orsini were able to entrench themselves within this territory, exposing their network of relationships with Nola’s most prominent families, and analysing the processes of their self-representation through artistic patronage.

The third section of the issue is dedicated to new publications and exhibitions. Echoing Settis’ reflection on Denkraum, we present Clio Nicastro’s La Dialettica del Denkraum in Aby Warburg, published this year for Palermo University Press; an introduction to Cultural Memories: a series published by Peter Lang and edited by Katia Pizzi. Giacomo Calandra di Roccolino with Mary Hertz Warburg: Free and Unconventional reviews the exhibition of the artist Mary Hertz Warburg. The issue closes with the important Choral Reading of Il metodo di Aby Warburg by Kurt W. Forster. L’antico dei gesti. Il futuro della memoria, where Barbara Baert, Victoria Cirlot, Georges Didi-Huberman, Michael Diers, Andrea Pinotti and Ianick Takaes offer us their personal reading of Warburg’s life and thought as they are presented by Forster’s newly translated book, edited by Ronzani editore.

From its birth in 1913 to its abolition in 2021, film censorship marked the history of Italian cinema, and its evolution mirrored the social, political, and cultural travail of the country. During the Fascist regime and in the postwar period, censorship was a powerful political tool in the hands of the ruling party; many films were banned or severely cut. By the end of the 1960s, censors had to cope with the changing morals and the widespread diffusion of sexuality in popular culture, which led to the boom of hardcore pornography. With the crisis of the national industry and the growing influence of television, censorship gradually changed its focus and targets. The book analyzes Italian film censorship from its early days to the present, discussing the most controversial cases and protagonists. These include such notorious works as Last Tango in Paris and Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom, and groundbreaking filmmakers such as Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini and Pier Paolo Pasolini, who pushed the limits of what was acceptable on screen, causing scandal and public debate.

Since its first issues, Engramma has come to terms with images in war. In 2001, after the attack on the Twin Towers; in 2015, an issue dedicated to the abecedaries of Aby Warburg, Bertolt Brecht, and Ernst Jünger; at the end of 2015, an issue on the martyrdom of Palmyra, dedicated to the archaeologist Khaled Al Asaad. L’Associazione Italiana per il Patrimonio Archeologico Industriale (AIPAI), in occasione dei suoi 25 anni, ha promosso i Secondi Stati Generali del Patrimonio Industriale. Per tracciare un bilancio ed elaborare strategie e visioni ha posto le condizioni per l’incontro tra gli addetti ai lavori e il confronto tra i molteplici ambiti operativi, di ricerca e istituzionali coinvolti. Ci si è riuniti a Roma e a Tivoli con la consapevolezza che il primo lascito dell’età industriale siamo noi, la nostra società con i suoi pregi e le sue contraddizioni, le incredibili conquiste degli ultimi secoli. La risposta è stata ampia e tra i numerosi contributi presentati in questo volume, si possono scorgere studi e appelli, buone pratiche di conservazione e progetti di riuso, percorsi culturali e azioni di valorizzazione del patrimonio intangibile. Il tutto fa ben constatare che pur con impianti metodologici fortemente caratterizzati, sono sempre di più le discipline che convergono sull’oggetto e sui contesti della produzione e gradualmente assimilano i principi consolidati dell’archeologia industriale. Le voci di una comunità segnata dai due anni di pandemia mostrano più incisivamente il divario tra il permanere di emergenze culturali e ambientali, da un lato, e un’aumentata tensione al riconoscimento e al ripensamento dell’eredità industriale, dall’altro. Quest’ultima si conferma sia nella centralità che le memorie e la cultura industriale hanno assunto nelle strategie di ripresa dei programmi nazionali ed europei, sia nelle potenzialità di riscatto sociale economico e ambientale che emergono da una declinazione aggiornata dei progetti di recupero e rigenerazione. The Italian Association for Industrial Archaeological Heritage - AIPAI, on its 25th anniversary, promoted the Second States General of Industrial Heritage. In order to draw a balance sheet and elaborate strategies and visions for the near future, it set the conditions for the meeting of insiders and the confrontation between the many operational, research and institutional spheres involved. We gathered in Rome and Tivoli with the awareness that the first legacy of the industrial age is us, our society with its merits and contradictions, the incredible achievements of the last centuries. The response was wide-ranging, and among the contributions presented in large numbers one can discern in-depth studies and denunciations, good conservation practices and reuse projects, cultural paths, and actions to enhance intangible heritage. All of which makes a good case for the fact that more and more disciplines, even with strongly characterized methodological frameworks, are converging on the object and contexts of production and are gradually assimilating the established principles of industrial archaeology. The voices of a community marked by the two-year pandemic show more incisively the gap between the persistence of cultural and environmental emergencies, on the one hand, and an increased tension to recognize and rethink industrial heritage, on the other. The latter is confirmed both in the centrality that industrial memories and culture have assumed in the recovery strategies of national and European programs, and in the potential for social economic and environmental redemption that emerges from an updated declination of recovery and regeneration projects.

The Christian image in the process of modern globalisation Drawing on original research covering different periods and spaces, this book sets out to appreciate the specific place of images in the history of evangelisation in the long modern period. How can we reconceptualise the functions of the visual mediation of the gospel message, both in terms of the production and reception of this message and in terms of its effective mediators, artists, religious, and cultural ambassadors? The contributions in this book offer multiple geographical and historical insights regarding the circulation of the image on the global scale of the Christianised world or the world in the process of being Christianised, from China to Iberia. Combining the contribution of historians and art historians, the authors highlight the points of intercultural encounter and tension around preaching, catechesis, devotional practices and the propagandistic use of images. Through its aesthetic and social study of the image, and by examining the inner and outer borders of Europe and the mission lands, Eloquent Images contributes significantly to the history of evangelisation, one of the major dynamics of the first European globalisation.
