From his 1856 introduction to the then new game of baseball, Henry Chadwick became one of the prime movers in the rise of baseball to its unprecedented popularity at the turn of the 20th century. A newspaper reporter and a keen amateur statistician, he helped mold the public perception of the game, as well as providing the basis for recording team and player achievements in the form of baseball statistics. Chadwick's many contributions to the game also included the cryptic method in which he recorded plays (the forerunner to today's scorecard) and the acceptance of the fly ball rule. Teaching by example, Chadwick's The American Game of Baseball includes early plays and players to illustrate the rules and the nuances of the sport. With these glimpses from the early days of baseball, The Game of Baseball is more than a manual. Iit is a uniquely important piece of sports history. Originally published in 1868. This facsimile edition is a must for baseball aficionados everywhere.

Henry Chadwick remains one of the titans of baseball history. As a pioneering baseball journalist and author, an innovator of scorekeeping practices and statistics, and chairman of the first rules committee, Chadwick left an indelible mark on the history of the game. This deeply researched biography is the first book-length work on the Hall of Famer, known at the time of his death as the "Father of Base Ball." It covers Chadwick's driving role in the symbiotic rise of baseball and sports journalism, and demonstrates how Chadwick helped baseball to become firmly established as an American cultural institution. Appendices provide a selected bibliography of Chadwick's writing and a guide for further research.

He explains the context that led each new feature of the game to emerge when it did, and chronicles the often surprising responses to these innovations."--BOOK JACKET.

The story of Jackie Robinson valiantly breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947 is one that most Americans know. But less recognized is the fact that some seventy years earlier, following the Civil War, baseball was tenuously biracial and had the potential for a truly open game. How, then, did the game become so firmly segregated that it required a trailblazer like Robinson? The answer, Ryan A. Swanson suggests, has everything to do with the politics of “reconciliation” and a wish to avoid the issues of race that an integrated game necessarily raised. The history of baseball during Reconstruction, as Swanson tells it, is a story of lost opportunities. Thomas Fitzgerald and Octavius Catto (a Philadelphia baseball tandem), for example, were poised to emerge as pioneers of integration in the 1860s. Instead, the desire to create a “national game”—professional and appealing to white Northerners and Southerners alike—trumped any movement toward civil rights. Focusing on Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Richmond—three cities with large African American populations and thriving baseball clubs—Swanson uncovers the origins of baseball’s segregation and the mechanics of its implementation. An important piece of sports history, his work also offers a better understanding of Reconstruction, race, and segregation in America.
