In the early days of blockchain technology, enthusiasts and developers were captivated by the promise of smart contracts that could execute automatically without human intervention, creating truly decentralized applications that operated independently of traditional institutions. However, as developers began building increasingly sophisticated applications, they encountered a fundamental limitation that threatened to constrain the entire ecosystem: smart contracts, despite their power and autonomy, were essentially isolated from the real world, unable to access the external data they needed to function effectively. This limitation became known as the "oracle problem," a challenge that struck at the heart of blockchain's potential. While smart contracts could process information and execute transactions based on predetermined conditions, they could only work with data that already existed on the blockchain. Real-world applications, however, required access to external information such as market prices, weather data, sports scores, election results, and countless other types of information that existed outside the blockchain ecosystem. Without reliable access to this external data, smart contracts would remain limited to simple internal operations, preventing them from realizing their full potential as programmable agreements that could replace traditional contracts and automate complex business processes.

How companies can gain strategic advantage by developing blockchain capabilities. Blockchain is far more than cryptocurrency. Regarded for a decade as complex and with limited application, blockchain has now matured to be on the verge of fully realizing its disruptive potential. In Enterprise Strategy for Blockchain, business strategy expert Ravi Sarathy shows how companies can gain competitive advantage by developing and deploying blockchain capabilities. Sarathy explains what makes blockchain unique, including its capacities to eliminate intermediaries, guard against hackers, decentralize, and protect privacy. Presenting examples drawn from such sectors as finance, supply chains, computer services, consumer products, and entertainment, he describes how executives can strategically assess blockchain’s applicability to their business. After outlining blockchain’s technological features—and its technological obstacles—Sarathy describes disruptive technologies already happening in the financial services market with the emergence of decentralized finance, or DeFi, arguing that a wave of innovation might be positioning DeFi as blockchain’s “killer app.” He also explores, among many other uses, a blockchain application that addresses chronic supply chain problems, pilot blockchain programs aimed at facilitating cross-border payments, and the use of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that allow digital art to be collected and traded. And he outlines a path for organizations that includes establishing a business case for applying blockchain, evaluating enterprise cost-benefits, and preparing the organization to develop the requisite knowledge and people skills while overcoming resistance to change. Business leaders should invest, explore and experiment with blockchain now, positioning their organizations to be first in their fields, ahead of both rising startups and late-to-the game incumbent peers.

Cryptocurrencies and digital assets have continued to gain widespread acceptance from both retail and institutional investors. As part of this continued growth, there has been an unfortunate series of ongoing and increasingly sophisticated frauds, Ponzi schemes, and hacks that have cost investors billions of dollars. Since the publication of the original Cryptocurrency and Digital Asset Fraud Casebook, conservative estimates indicate that there have been thousands of new digital asset fraud cases that have contributed to billions in broadening losses in space. Beyond the digital asset space, cryptocurrency-related scams also continue to present increasingly meaningful threats to traditional finance institutions, the global economy, and national security, as well. These new challenges, combined with the ongoing evolving regulatory environment for digital assets, create an environment where there is a continued need for the up-to-date information and analysis of real-world case studies. It includes an up-to-date analysis of recent case studies in cryptocurrency and digital asset fraud alongside an analysis of recent decentralized finance (DeFi) hacks, smart contract attacks, and rug pulls. This book reviews the impact of digital asset bankruptcies, the FTX fraud, and the industry-wide post-FTX fallout on the growth of cryptocurrency fraud. It also examines the explosive growth of cryptocurrency romance scams, pig butchering, and related organized crime money laundering efforts and includes a related exclusive case study. Offering an in-depth examination of digital asset frauds in the gaming, metaverse, and NFT spaces, it also covers Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) fraud, smart contract attacks, dApp scams, crypto asset manager investment fraud, mining fraud, honeypots, meme coins, and artificial intelligence-based digital asset fraud. Leveraging the author’s experience analyzing and implementing compliance and operations best practices with a variety of cryptocurrency and digital asset projects and consulting with international regulators on blockchain and digital asset policy, this book will be of interest to those working throughout the cryptocurrency and digital asset space including Web 3.0 builders and service providers including lawyers, auditors, blockchain infrastructure, regulators, governments, retail investors, and institutional investors.
