In the fifteenth century, two families of royal descent, the Houses of York and Lancaster, clashed in an epic series of civil wars to win and control the throne of England. The crown slipped precariously from one family to the other, and not until the destruction of both Houses and the rise of a new royal family, the Tudors, did peace and stability return to the country. Robert Silverberg, writing as Franklin Hamilton, brings the personalities, politics, and events of this complex and exciting period to vivid and relevant life.

The story unfolds in a parallel world, akin to the realms of modern supreme fantasy. It follows the odyssey of a young boy named Yazan, whose destiny has bound him to safeguard a profound secret embodied in mystical gems known as the "Stones of Truth." These precious gems lie at the heart of each kingdom, possessing the potential to tip the balance of power and reign over the ancient civilization of mighty kings - legends that once governed the entire world. Yazan becomes the linchpin, the missing link required to master and control the Stones of Truth, and with it, the fate of these kingdoms. However, his newfound role also makes him a target for the forces shrouded in darkness, particularly Vanmand, the reigning monarch of the Dejan Kingdom and the steward of humanity's crown. These crowns hold the keys to magical and physical abilities that were once only spoken of in the pages of legendary tales. What lies hidden within the Stones of Truth, and what boundless powers do they conceal? Why does the world bestow these crowns upon its kings, granting them dominion over this ancient magic? Will young Yazan embrace his destiny and yield to the demands of Vanmand, the bearer of the crown of humanity? Or will the world rise to challenge its own predetermined fate?

The book looks at the career of the London playwright and prose pamphleteer Thomas Dekker between the years 1613 and 1628. The period and subject matter link the book with mainstream historical and literary topics, most particularly to the longer-term history of the Civil Wars and to popular literature and drama in the age of Shakespeare and Jonson. Pamphlets have been used as sources for topics ranging from witchcraft to popular politics, and this book seeks to inform more careful readings of such sources. Drawing on interdisciplinary historical methods and literary scholarship, it uses literary texts as a way into the culture of print and debate in early seventeenth century England. In so doing it contributes to the post-revisionist historiography of political consciousness and print cultures under the early Stuarts, as well as illuminating the career of a relatively neglected and misunderstood writer.

Under Solomon's Throne provides a rare ground-level analysis of post-Soviet Central Asia's social and political paradoxes by focusing on an urban ethnic community: the Uzbeks in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, who have maintained visions of societal renewal throughout economic upheaval, political discrimination, and massive violence. Morgan Liu illuminates many of the challenges facing Central Asia today by unpacking the predicament of Osh, a city whose experience captures key political and cultural issues of the region as a whole. Situated on the border of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan—newly independent republics that have followed increasingly divergent paths to reform their states and economies—the city is subject to a Kyrgyz government, but the majority of its population are ethnic Uzbeks. Conflict between the two groups led to riots in 1990, and again in 2010, when thousands, mostly ethnic Uzbeks, were killed and nearly half a million more fled across the border into Uzbekistan. While these tragic outbreaks of violence highlight communal tensions amid long-term uncertainty, a close examination of community life in the two decades between reveals the way Osh Uzbeks have created a sense of stability and belonging for themselves while occupying a postcolonial no-man's-land, tied to two nation-states but not fully accepted by either one. The first ethnographic monograph based on extensive local-language fieldwork in a Central Asian city, this study examines the culturally specific ways that Osh Uzbeks are making sense of their post-Soviet dilemmas. These practices reveal deep connections with Soviet and Islamic sensibilities and with everyday acts of dwelling in urban neighborhoods. Osh Uzbeks engage the spaces of their city to shape their orientations relative to the wider world, postsocialist transformations, Islamic piety, moral personhood, and effective leadership. Living in the shadow of Solomon's Throne, the city's central mountain, they envision and attempt to build a just social order.
