Each essay is a sustained reflection on a particular aspect of Christian mission and ministry in Namibia and beyond. Thorsten Prill looks at both the challenges and opportunities for the Church in Namibia. He argues that para-church organisations with their focus on evangelism, church-planting and theological training have a significant role to play. In a second essay he identifies key issues in mission today and challenges churches, mission organisations and mission partners to be caught up in a missionary movement with God. Basilius Kasera demonstrates that the use of traditional African names for God as representatives of the God of the Bible is problematic as it leads to a distorted understanding of the biblical revelation. Such an approach fails to distinguish clearly between the revelation of Yahweh and the idols Africans have always worshipped. In a further article Basilius Kasera discusses the dangers of prosperity gospel teaching for the Namibian Church. Simon Gillham argues that the models and assumptions behind theological education in Africa have been largely imported from the west. Using the biblical metaphor of a tree representing spiritual maturity, he explores what roots, what fruits and what species of theological education might be most appropriate for the African context. Victor Kuligin examines the gener

A collection of 8 articles from the January 2020 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. In Inculturation in Africa: Challenges and Prospects, Marcel Uwineza, SJ suggests certain paths that the inculturation process could take in Africa. He explains how refusing to inculturate the Gospel message slows down the process of the Church putting down roots in the continent. Pope Francis urges us not to become accomplices of any forms of human trafficking, but instead to forge a new worldwide solidarity and fraternity. Human Trafficking and the Dignity of Work discusses one of the most important and urgent global social responsibilities of the time. In what way is the anthropological and cosmic figure of the couple in the garden the bearer of a theological truth? Jean-Pierre Sonnet, SJ reflects on the twofold perspective that associates the mystery of the garden with that of the human couple in Each Couple is like a Garden: A Biblical Perspective. Juan Antonio Guerrero, SJ suggests three areas where we spend our daily lives as citizens in Urban Life and Citizenship. Public space, work and the family are these areas of our life that sometimes induce paralyzing habits of the heart, claiming they do not encourage relationships or common purposes. The synod for the Amazon was an example of a Church in movement, listening to the Spirit through the cry of the region’s indigenous peoples of the Amazon – its real protagonists. In From the Amazon River to the Tiber: Notes from a Special Synod, Victor Codina, SJ shares insights on aspects of this important ecclesial event. The album Ghosteen, by Australian musician Nick Cave, is a reinterpretation of his mourning for the death of his son. Claudio Zonta SJ says the album is a bridge over the darkness of pain that can only be crossed with the desire that love and pity are really the final words about human existence.

Problems And Prospects Of The Search For A Catholic Spiritual Tradition In The Ghanaian Catholic Pastoral Ministry written by Norbert Okoledah and has been published by LIT Verlag Münster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Religion categories.

Today, Christianity has become the most popular and fast-growing religion in Ghana. Paradoxically, the Christian Church, in whatever form it has taken, has, for a complexity of reasons, basically remained a weak church with a weak foundation. This book discusses, from a theologico-cultural anthropological perspective, some of the ecclesial and social processes and factors that, the author believes, are responsible for the creation of this paradox in the case of the Ghanaian Catholic Church and demonstrates how they influence the search for a Catholic spiritual tradition in it.

This volume reflects on a credible and a new language of Christian mission in Africa. The author’s thoughts and approaches not only provide a missiological insight which contribute to the repertoire of expanding fresh ideas in the missiological studies but also serves the purpose of highlighting the active participation of Africans in the missionary mandate of Jesus Christ. In other words, the scope of missiology needs a contextualized interpretation. Thus, he proposes a proactive language for missiology in Africa thereby underlining Africans as normal and full members of the human family. In the light of the Vatican II mission theology, the new language should be based on the fact that Africans will grow and do better in admiration and not in sympathy. Interestingly, the arguments in this volume opens the space for the on-going discussions in the mission of the church in the era of secularization and post-modernity. Consequently, a new language for missiology in Africa will come from the retrieval and modernization of our African cultural matrix pursued from the point of view of the daily struggles of the Africans themselves for survival which also addresses Africans in the spirit of cooperation.

Using the biblical metaphor of a tree representing spiritual maturity, he explores what roots, what fruits and what species of theological education might be most appropriate for the African context. Victor Kuligin examines the general state of the Namibian Church in light of the well-known statement that ‘faith without deeds is dead’. He argues that there is a discrepancy between the claim of being a Christian country and the lifestyle and conduct of many Namibian church members. He finds an answer for this disconnect in the second chapter of the New Testament letter of James. Achim Rieger believes that local church leadership should be, first and foremost, trained in the local church – given the socio-economic conditions in Namibia. He shows that the training strategy used by the apostle Paul can be a viable option for the Namibian Church. Spencer Tjijenda examines the spiritual condition of the Herero-Banderu people before and during the missionary period. He argues that the evaluation of pioneer missionary Carl Hugo Hahn was not only true but was also motivated by deep concern and love for this Namibian people group – an attitude that is still relevant for God’s mission in Namibia today.
