Excerpt from Chance Change in China As we stepped on shore at Hongkong, behold the streets were gay with many coloured flags in honour of the birth Of the People's Kingdom. Ahigh Official in the Imperial service, hurrying With all speed to Peking, laughed sceptically at the mere suggestion. Who is this Sun Yat Sen he said, many in the north have not even heard his name. Our Imperial friend, however, preferred not to go on shore at Hongkong. He stayed in seclusion on board the steamer and took the precaution to have his queue removed before our arrival in Shanghai. Hongkong was certainly a little premature in its rejoicings, but during those first momentous days of the Chinese Republic some confusion arose in regard to dates. I remember no fewer than three New Year's days, one according to the Western calendar, one by order of the Nanking Government on January 1sth, and one on the Old Chinese date at the beginning Of February. In Shanghai the new era showed itself in many ways. Rents of houses, of every kind of lodging, rose by leaps and bounds, for all the world had brought his wife and his Wealth to dwell in the safety of foreign Concessions until the storm had blown past. Excerpt from Changing China Not only did we seek information from English and American but also from French and Italian missions as occasion offered. We tested and com pared this information by the information we got from that most enlightened and able body of men who form the consular body in China. We are especially grateful to Sir John Jordan, by whose great diplomatic skill both the position of England and the goodwill of the Chinese are maintained. “Is democracy in crisis?” Against the background of a visible loss of trust in political, economic, religious and other institutions in Japan and Germany, this question is being posed with increasing urgency. This volume brings together contributions from political sciences, sociology, economics, psychology, history, law, and educational science to shed light on the future of our democracies, economies, educational systems, party politics, national policies, and social-structural changes, as well as socialization in the family and school, and related value changes. By focusing on Japan and Germany, and including examples from Western Europe and East Asia, this publication will determine transnational tendencies and provide an understanding of the different consequences of development from country to country against the background of different historical-cultural traditions and institutional realities.

Excerpt from Forty Years in China: Or China in Transition I am fully persuaded that the Chinese have many admirable qualities; qualities that have made, and are destined still to make them a great nation. Yet I would be a false friend to that people to whose elevation I have consecrated my life, and of whom I'have so much hope in the future, were I not to speak plainly of the influences that are hurrying them on to ruin unless speedily checked by their acceptance of progress from the West, and that Divine religion, which, though originating in the East, is now propagated from the West. Hoping that God's blessing may rest upon this slight tribute toward promoting His truth, I commit it to the public, hoping it may throw some light upon the new Eastern question.
