The beloved New York Times bestselling Dominick Trilogy Rhea blinked in disbelief. "What an insufferable man you are. And whether you are, as you would have me believe, a marquis, or whether you are a tinker, I would still find you the rudest, most vulgar individual I have ever had the misfortune to encounter." "Well done, my dear. I am impressed by this splendid show of ladylike disdain, feigned though it be, but well done nonetheless. But the light of truth has revealed you in my cabin. Now, how do you explain yourself out of that?" Lady Rhea Claire, kidnapped and shipped to the Colonies as an indentured servant, manages with wits and courage to escape...straight into the arms of a ruthless English pirate. For all his worldly ways, Dante Leighton, Marquis of Jacqobi and captain of the Sea Dragon, never expected to discover his redemption and his greatest treasure within the amethyst eyes of a beautiful English refugee. Praise for Laurie McBain: "Ms. McBain's flare for the romantic intermingled with suspense will keep the reader riveted to the story until the last page."-Affaire de Coeur "Vivid sense of description, colorful characters...I found myself happily lost in the magnificence of the storytelling."-Los Angeles Herald Examiner Dominick Trilogy: Moonstruck Madness Chance the Winds of Fortune Dark Before the Rising Storm

‘The Winds of Chance’ by Rex Beach is an adventure novel which tells a fictionalised story of the Gold Rush. Adapted into a silent film of the same name in 1925, the story follows the penniless Pierce Phillips who cannot go seeking gold so instead works packing supplies for the other adventurers. Phillips soon falls in love with Countess Courteau but when he proposes to her he discovers that she already has a husband. Pierce Phillips then joins a travelling show where one member, Laure, falls in love with him. When Phillips pays more attention to Rouletta, a daughter of a gambler, Laure becomes jealous and conspires with Count Courteau, who believes that Phillips is his wife’s lover. Set in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush, this novel will be enjoyed by fans of ‘Goldrush: A Real Life Alaskan Adventure’, and ‘The Klondike Gold Rush’. Rex Beach, was an American novelist, playwright, and Olympic water polo player. His novels, most of which were adventure novels, were influenced by Jack London – author of ‘White Fang’ – and they were very popular during the early 1900s. His second novel, ‘The Spoilers’ which was based on a true experience he witnessed while in Alaska of corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors, became one of the best-selling novels of 1906.

This timely collection brings together twelve original essays on the cultural meaning of the sea in British literature and history, from early modern times to the present. Interdisciplinary in conception, it charts metaphorical and material links between the idea of the sea in the cultural imagination and its significance for the social and political history of Britain, offering a fresh analysis of the impact of the ocean on the formation of British cultural identities. Among the cultural and literary artifacts considered are early modern legal treatises on marine boundaries, Renaissance and Romantic poetry, 19th- and 20th-century novels, popular sea songs, recent Hollywood films, as well as a diverse range of historical and critical writings. Writers discussed include Shakespeare, Milton, Coleridge, Scott, Conrad, du Maurier, Unsworth, O'Brian, and others. All these cultural and literary 'fictions of the sea' are set in relation to wider issues relevant to maritime history and the historical experience of seafaring: problems of navigation and orientation, piracy, empire, colonialism, slavery, multi-ethnic shipboard communities, masculinity, gender relations. By combining the interests of three related but distinct areas of study-the analysis of sea fiction, critical maritime history, and cultural studies-in a focus upon the historical meaning of the sea in relation to its textual and cultural representation, Fictions of the Sea offers an original contribution to the practice of existing disciplines.
