Excerpt from Chancellorsville and Gettysburg Richelieu once exclaimed, upon giving away a high ap pointment: Now I have made one ingrate and a thousand enemies. Every one who /writes the history of the Great Rebellion will often have occasion to reiterate the state ment for the military critic must necessarily describe facts which imply praise or censure. Those who have contributed to great successes think much more might have been said on the subject, and those who have caused reverses and de feats are bitter in their denunciations. Nevertheless, the history of the war should be written before the facts have faded from the memory of living men, and have become mere matters of tradition. In a narrative of this kind, resting upon a great number of voluminous details, I cannot hope to have wholly escaped error, and wherever I have misconceived or misstated a fact. Excerpt from The Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, Vol. 1 The Political Condition that Brought On the War of Rebellion, the Cause of so Many Defeats of the Union Army, and the Reason the Rebellion Was Not Put Down Sooner. A few words as to the cause of the war will not be out of place here, for this is in the line of our study and should precede the description of the battle of Chancellorsville. When our forefathers had struggled through seven long years of war with the mother country, then the most powerful nation on earth, suffering greater privations than had ever been the lot of human beings to endure in the same length of time, and forced that great nation to acknowledge their independence, they then discovered that their troubles were by no means ended, they were left without a national organization, each colony was independent of the rest, so a petition was circulated asking each colony to elect and send delegates to a convention, to be held at Philadelphia, May, 1787. The enemy having become greatly encouraged with their numerous victories, after their victory at Chancellorsville decided to no longer confine themselves south of Mason and Dixon's Line, but to extend the war into the North. They believed that if General Lee could succeed m penetrating into Pennsylvania, and capturing Harrisburg, he would have but little. Excerpt from Stuart's Cavalry in the Gettysburg CampaignTun battle of Chancellorsville was fought on May 8, 1868; it was a prelude to Gettysburg. Considering the numerical inferiority of the Southern army and the fact thatittooktheofiensiveanddroveitsantagonistoutof his entrmchments over the river it had just triumphantly crossed, I consider it the boldut deed of arms and the most wonderful achievement in the history of war.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Battle of Gettysburg: From the History of the Civil War in America The battle of Gettysburg was undoubtedly one of the greatest conflicts of modern times, not only from the number of comba tants engaged and the desperate nature of the struggle, but be cause on the now classic heights of Cemetery Ridge, Gulp's Hill, and the Round Tops the future of the American Republic, for weal or for woe, was fought and won on those memorable July days. As decisive in its character and far - reaching results as the battle of \vaterloo, like it, it has been the subject of endless con troversy and military criticism, and has brought forth a multitude of books, pamphlets, and letters, most of which serve but to be wilder and darken visibly the student of history. Excerpt from Chancellorsville and Gettysburg In writing this narrative, which relates to the decisive campaign which freed the Northern States from invasion, it may not be out of place to state what facilities I have had for observation in the fulfilment of so important a task. I can only say that I was, to a considerable extent, an actor in the scenes I describe, and knew the principal leaders on both sides, in consequence of my association with them at West Point, and, subsequently, in the regular army. Indeed, several of them, including Stonewall Jackson and A. P. Hill, were, prior to the war, officers in the regiment to which I belonged. As commander of the Defences of Washington in the spring of 1862, I was, owing to the nature of my duties, brought into intimate relations with the statesmen who controlled the Government at that time, and became well acquainted with President Lincoln.
