[Church Mergers. Between Coercion and Self-Determination] This empirical study is dedicated to the hitherto little explored phenomenon of church mergers. For this purpose, seven merger processes from three different regional churches were selected and analyzed. Daniel Rudolphi conducted group discussions and guided interviews with the involved actors. He is particularly interested in the interpretation of the merger processes and images of the church underlying them. In doing so, he shows which elements of a merger process are of particular importance from the perspective of the involved actors. He sets the topic of church mergers in the larger discourse on church reform and discusses the question of why church mergers are often a very emotional event.

This edited volume provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse and multi-faceted research on governance in multilevel systems. The book features a collection of cutting-edge trans-Atlantic contributions, covering topics such as federalism, decentralization as well as various forms and processes of regionalization and Europeanization. While the field of multilevel governance is comparatively young, research in the subject has also come of age as considerable theoretical, conceptual and empirical advances have been achieved since the first influential works were published in the early noughties. The present volume aims to gauge the state-of-the-art in the different research areas as it brings together a selection of original contributions that are united by a variety of configurations, dynamics and mechanisms related to governing in multilevel systems.

This book marks a decade of a column that appears every Monday in The Hindu's Metro Plus, Madras edition. Madras Miscellany has, over that decade, created an awareness and a greater appreciation of the significant past of Madras and of the events and the people who over the years made Madras "the first city of modern India", a description of the City the writer of the column, S.Muthiah, never tires of reiterating. Over a 1500 or so items that appeared in the 514 columns published during Madras Miscellany's first decade appear in the book in three sections:'People', 'Places' and 'Potpourri', the last named being everything else that doesn't fit into the other two sections. And in them there develops a rather comprehensive story of Madras over its nearly 375 years of history. In sum, this is a book for anyone interested in the development of Madras and its considerable contribution to modern India.

Can a subject be sovereign in a hegemony? Can creativity be reined in by forces of empire? Studying closely the oral narrations and writings of four Indian authors in colonial India, The Audacious Raconteur argues that even the most hegemonic circumstances cannot suppress "audacious raconteurs": skilled storytellers who fashion narrative spaces that allow themselves to remain sovereign and beyond subjugation. By drawing attention to the vigorous orality, maverick use of photography, literary ventriloquism, and bilingualism in the narratives of these raconteurs, Leela Prasad shows how the ideological bulwark of colonialism—formed by concepts of colonial modernity, history, science, and native knowledge—is dismantled. Audacious raconteurs wrest back meanings of religion, culture, and history that are closer to their lived understandings. The figure of the audacious raconteur does not only hover in an archive but suffuses everyday life. Underlying these ideas, Prasad's personal interactions with the narrators' descendants give weight to her innovative argument that the audacious raconteur is a necessary ethical and artistic figure in human experience. Thanks to generous funding from Duke University, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other repositories.

Augustine S Conversion From Traditional Free Choice To Non Free Free Will written by Kenneth M. Wilson and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-25 with Religion categories.

The consensus view asserts Augustine developed his later doctrines ca. 396 CE while writing Ad Simplicianum as a result of studying scripture. His early De libero arbitrio argued for traditional free choice refuting Manichaean determinism, but his anti-Pelagian writings rejected any human ability to believe without God giving faith. Kenneth M. Wilson's study is the first work applying the comprehensive methodology of reading systematically and chronologically through Augustine's entire extant corpus (works, sermons, and letters 386-430 CE), and examining his doctrinal development. The author explores Augustine's later theology within the prior philosophical-religious context of free choice versus deterministic arguments. This analysis demonstrates Augustine persisted in traditional views until 412 CE and his theological transition was primarily due to his prior Stoic, Neoplatonic, and Manichaean influences.

The English Novel In History 1840 1895 written by Elizabeth Ermarth and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-07 with Literary Criticism categories.

The construction of history as a social common denominator is a powerful achievement of the nineteenth-century novel, a form dedicated to experimenting with democratic social practice as it conflicts with economic and feudal visions of social order. Through revisionary readings of familiar nineteenth-century texts The English Novel in History 1840-1895 takes a multidisciplinary approach to literary history. It highlights how narrative shifts from one construction of time to another and reformulates fundamental ideas of identity, nature and society. Elizabeth Ermarth discusses the range of novels alongside other cultural material, including painting, science, religious, political and economic theory. She explores the problems of how a society, as defined in democratic terms, can accommodate political, gender and class differences without resorting to hierarchy; and how narrowly conceived economic agendas compete with social cohesion. Students, advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and specialists will find this text invaluable.
