Les Ailes Du Sahel written by Le Zwarts and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Science categories.

'Living on the Edge' examines the function of the Sahel region of Africa as an important wintering area for long-distance migrant birds. It describes the challenges the birds have to cope with – climate change, of course, and rapid man-made habitat changes related to deforestation, irrigation and reclamation of wetlands. How have all these changes affected the birds, and have birds adapted to these changes? Can we explain the changing numbers of breeding birds in Europe by changes in the Sahel, or vice versa?

Allan Greer studies Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Amerindian to be beatified. William Wicken analyses relations between Mi'kmaq and Acadians. Bruce White and Thomas Wien examine the fur trade, with White focusing on the Lake Superior region and Wien on the St Lawrence Valley. Catherine Desbarats looks at the role of the state as a buyer of goods and services in Canada. Mario Lalancette and Alan M. Stewart study the evolution of Montreal's urban geography in the seventeenth century. Geneviève Postolec analyses matrimonial practices at Neuville, and Sylvie Dépatie examines the urban and peri-urban countryside in Montreal's gardens and orchards. The collection offers valuable perspectives on both the history of New France and the socio-economic history of colonial societies.

French Philosophy Today written by Watkin Christopher Watkin and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-03 with Philosophy categories.

Alain Badiou, Quentin Meillassoux, Catherine Malabou, Michel Serres and Bruno Latour: this new generation of French philosophers is laying fresh claim to the human. Across a number of new strains of philosophy, they are rethinking humanity's relationships: to 'nature' and 'culture', to the objects that surround us, to the possibility of social and political change, to ecology and even to our own brains. Christopher Watkin draws out both the promises and perils of these new philosophies. And he shows just how high the stakes are for our technologically advanced but socially atomised and ecologically vulnerable society.

Semi Presidentialism written by Robert Elgie and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-25 with Political Science categories.

This book examines the relationship between semi-presidentialism and democratic performance. Semi-presidentialism - where a constitution provides for both a directly elected president and a prime minister and cabinet responsible to the legislature - has become the regime type of choice for new democracies. There are now over 50 countries in the world with a semi-presidential constitution and the vast majority of these countries have chosen this form of government since the early 1990s. This book operationalises Shugart and Carey's distinction between president-parliamentarism - where the prime minister is responsible to both the legislature and to the directly elected president - and premier-presidentialism - where the prime minister is responsible to the legislature alone. The book shows that, all else equal, the president-parliamentary sub-type is more likely to be associated with a poorer democratic performance than its premier-presidential counterpart. The evidence is based on a mixed-method approach, including large-n comparative statistical studies of all semi-presidential democracies since 1919, as well as in-depth case studies. Comparative Politics is a series for students, teachers, and researchers of political science that deals with contemporary government and politics. Global in scope, books in the series are characterised by a stress on comparative analysis and strong methodological rigour. The series is published in association with the European Consortium for Political Research. For more information visit: www.essex.ac.uk/ecpr
