The suddenness and depth of the recession has raised questions about the workability of capitalism not seen since the 1930s. One of the constraints on recovery is the growing belief that if the old model did not work there is no new one on offer. This book sets out to provide one, arguing that reconstructing a bust financial system is not just a technical question. It cannot be done without a wholescale revision of the wider system and values on which it is based. And fairness must be placed at the heart of the new capitalism if our society is to recover its values. Will Hutton's new book musters brilliant, convincing arguments which will lend favour on both right and left. It is set to be a book which captures the mood of the moment in the same way that THE STATE WE'RE IN did.

This book provides a unique insight into social change in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century. It draws on three internationally renowned British birth cohort studies, based on tracking samples of people born in one week in 1946, 1958 and 1970 through surveys from birth, through childhood and adolescence and into adulthood. In 1999-2000 all three cohorts were surveyed in the same period, which provided the first-ever opportunity for a direct comparison of the lives of the three groups of people. The contrasts between the cohorts have been striking, and have revealed the effects of social and educational change, as well as differences in health. A generational shift has taken place towards more uncertain adult careers, and marriage and parenthood postponed or rejected. Rich and poor have become increasingly polarised and those without resources face social exclusion. Each chapter in Changing Britain, Changing Lives covers a major aspect of life – family and parenting, qualifications and employment, income and living standards, physical and mental health, life styles and health behaviour, citizenship and social participation – and is written by leading analysts in that area. The book will be a valuable resource for those working in education, the social sciences, community medicine and epidemiology, and for anyone who seeks insight into the changing conditions of life in Britain today.

This is a study of how, and why, the British economy has changed since 1951. It covers the Golden Age of 1945-1973 when unemployment was below one million; when governments built millions of council houses and flats; when electricity, telephones, and gas were supplied by nationalised monopolies; when income and wealth inequality were narrowing; and when the UK was not a member of the European Economic Community. Moving through the inflation, rising unemployment, and rapid contraction of the manufacturing industry from the mid- 1970s, Changing Times examines the transfer of assets which was effected in the privatisation of public housing and nationalised industries from the early 1980s. The role of the State changed as public investment fell. The financing of old-age care, of state pensions, and of the National Health Service became of increasing concern and were less politically amenable to the approach of using private finance (the Private Finance Initiative and tuition fees) to fund former public obligations. Changes were made to the system of taxation, but public expenditure changed little as a share of national income, although the government now built little. Difficulties emerged in ensuring adequate housing for a growing population, and uncertainty grew as to where future investment in necessities like electricity supply would come from. Having narrowed in the Golden Age, inequality of income and wealth widened. Environmental concerns also grew, from the local smogs of the 1950s, through the concern with acid rain from the 1960s, to the current global concern with climate change. The financial crash of 2008 and the decision to 'Brexit' in the referendum of 2016 reduced economic growth and highlighted the extent of economic change since 1951. This is a study of that change.
