The problem of interest in this paper is the explanation of the excess of female mortality over male mortality in India. What appears to be unique to South Asia are the changes in mortality from 1881 to 1981 which led (after 1901) to the appearance of and increase in the female mortality disadvantage. Two different explanations for the sex differential in mortality are examined. The common explanations in the literature focus on traditional culture and female roles as factors contributing to the female disadvantage. In this paper an alternate explanation is used to argue that traditional culture and roles do not provide an adequate explanation of the appearance and increase of a female mortality disadvantage over time. Rather, consideration is given to some specific social and economic factors, often referred to as modernization, which changed in the last century. Data on individuals collected over a two-year period were analyzed to explore the two perspectives. Though results fail to support the idea that traditional female roles led to the mortality disadvantage, they are consistent with the modified explanation that changes due to both modernization and certain non-modern, Western influences probably led to higher female than male mortality. Finally, a recommendation is made for more research on this topic using individual mortality data rather than sex ratios or aggregate mortality data.

This open access book examines the triangle between family, gender, and health in Europe from a demographic perspective. It helps to understand patterns and trends in each of the three components separately, as well as their interdependencies. It overcomes the widely observable specialization in demographic research, which usually involves researchers studying either family or fertility processes or focusing on health and mortality. Coverage looks at new family and partnership forms among the young and middle-aged, their relationship with health, and the pathways through which they act. Sex differences in mortality (SDIM) vary over time and place as a function of social, health, and medical circumstances. The magnitude of these variations, and their response to large socioeconomic changes, suggest that biological differences cannot fully account for sex differences in survival. We document "stylized facts" about SDIM with which any theory will have to contend. We draw on a wide swath of mortality data, including probability of survival to age 70 by county in the United States, the Human Mortality Database data for 18 high-income countries since 1900, and mortality data within and across developing countries over time periods for which reasonably reliable data are available. We show that, in each of the periods of economic development after the onset of demographic and epidemiologic transition, cross-sectional variation in SDIM exhibits a consistent pattern of female resilience to mortality under adversity. Moreover, as societies develop, M/F survival first declines and then increases, a "SDIM transition" embedded within the demographic and epidemiologic transitions.

Until recently, studies of women's health received scant research attention in the context of the overall magnitude of research conducted on health. Even for health issues that affect both men and women, most research has been limited to male subjects, leaving a large gap in our knowledge base concerning women's health. Finally, the decade of the 1990s is ushering in a shift in this inequity. In 1990 the U.S. National Institutes of Health issued a compelling report citing the lack of sufficient research on women's health as a major gap in our knowledge, and a mandate has been issued to add women as study subjects in research or to document why they have not been included. Such directives will undoubtedly lead to a much-needed burgeoning of research activities in the area of women's health as we approach the twenty-first century. Despite limited research resources, however, there have been steady, scientifically rigorous voices in the wilderness for the last several years, and many of the best investigators are represented in this volume. These workers have led the vanguard in exploring psychosocial factors that are likely to differentially affect women's and men's health. For example, women and men engage in social roles that often differ, if not in quantity, then certainly in quality. Sex differences in role expectations, environmen tal qualities, role burdens related to the domains of work and family, and abilities to adapt to and cope with stressful situations may have a distinctive impact on health.
