This book summarizes a network of interrelated ideas which I have developed, off and on, over the past eight or ten years. The underlying theme is the psychological interplay of order and chaos. Or, to put it another way, the interplay of deduction and induction. I will try to explain the relationship between logical, orderly, conscious, rule-following reason and fluid, self organizing, habit-governed, unconscious, chaos-infused intuition. My previous two books, The Structure of Intelligence and The Evolving Mind, briefly touched on this relationship. But these books were primarily concerned with other matters: SI with constructing a formal language for discussing mentality and its mechanization, and EM with exploring the role of evolution in thought. They danced around the edges of the order/chaos problem, without ever fully entering into it. My goal in writing this book was to go directly to the core of mental process, "where angels fear to tread" -- to tackle all the sticky issues which it is considered prudent to avoid: the nature of consciousness, the relation between mind and reality, the justification of belief systems, the connection between creativity and mental illness,.... All of these issues are dealt with here in a straightforward and unified way, using a combination of concepts from my previous work with ideas from chaos theory and complex systems science.

Bringing together the two seemingly unrelated concepts,fuzzy logic andchaos theory,isprimarilymotivatedbytheconceptofsoft computing (SC),initiated by Lot? A. Zadeh, the founder of fuzzy set theory. The principal constituents of SC are fuzzy logic (FL), neural network theory (NN) and probabilistic reasoning (PR), with the latter subsuming parts of belief networks, genetic algorithms, chaos theory and learning theory. What is important to note is that SC is not a melange of FL, NN and PR. Rather, it is an integration in which each of the partners contributes a distinct methodology for addressing problems in their common domain. In this perspective, the principal cont- butions of FL, NN and PR are complementary rather than competitive. SC di?ers from conventional (hard) computing in that it is tolerant of imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth. In e?ect, the role model for soft computing is the human mind. The ?eld of applied nonlinear dynamics has attracted scientists and engineers across many different disciplines to develop innovative ideas and methods to study c- plex behavior exhibited by relatively simple systems. Acommontheme among these and many other examples is the underlying universal laws of nonl- ear science that govern the behavior, in space and time, of a given system. In order to properly characterize the content of this book, it is important to clarify ?rst the intended meaning of its title Fuzzy Logic. This clari?cation is needed since the term “fuzzy logic,” as currently used in the literature, is viewed either in a narrow sense or in a broad sense. In the narrow sense, fuzzy logic is viewed as an area devoted to the formal development, in a u- ?ed way, of the various logical systems of many-valued logic. It is concerned withformalizingsyntactic aspects(basedonthenotionofproof)andsemantic aspects (based on the notion oftruth) of the variouslogical calculi. In order to be acceptable, each of these logical calculi must be sound (provability implies truth) and complete (truth implies provability). The most representativep- lication of fuzzy logic in this sense is, in my opinion, the classic book by Peter Hajek [1]. When the term “fuzzy logic” is viewed in the broad sense, it refers to an extensive agenda whose primary aim is to utilize the apparatus of fuzzy set theoryfordevelopingsoundconcepts,principles,andmethodsforrepresenting and dealing with knowledge expressed by statements in natural language. Although workin fuzzy logicin the broadsense is not directly concernedwith the issues that are investigated under fuzzy logic in the narrow sense, the importance of the latter is that it provides the former with solid theoretical foundations. After examining the content of this book, it is easy to conclude that its title,FuzzyLogic, referstofuzzylogicinthebroadsense. Thisisconsistent,by and large, with the usual meaning of the term “fuzzy logic” in the literature.
