Excerpt from Chapters on Animals It is probable that Dr. Arnold's disinclination for the study of animal life, and his painful feelings regarding it, had their origin In a peculiarity of his which made him such an excellent schoolmaster - the intense pleasure with which he contemplated moral'and intellectual advance, a pleasure which had for its shadow a feeling of intense disgust for incorrigibles. To a man with these feelings always highly-wrought, and even rather over-excited by the nature of his work, a man always anxious to make good Christians and cultivated gentlemen, the brute world must have seemed a very discouraging kind of material. Excerpt from Chapters on Animals, Dogs Cats and Horses Philip gilbert hamerton, an art critic of keen insight and wide reputation, whose writings are remarkable for their attractive style, was born in 1834 and died in 1894. The greater portion of his life was spent in France; the rest of it chiefly in one of the wildest and most beautiful parts of Scotland, where he lived as much as possible among his friends, the animals His wife says that he never could be without a dog, and the following words in which he prefaces the book (chapters on Animals, London, 1874) from which these pages are taken, together with the chapters themselves, will show what a warm lover and kind-hearted master animals had in him. Excerpt from The Romance of Animal Life: Short Chapters in Natural History See, for example, how absolutely dependent man is upon the earth-worm which he heedlessly treads under his feet, or cuts asunder with his spade. As the late Charles Darwin has shown us, man could not have found a place upon the earth had not the worm prepared the way for him. Last created of all beings, he could not have procured food but for the labours of the earth-worm, to which is due the whole of the soil upon which the trees and grasses find root. Is not this physical fact as romantic as any production of the novelist's brain? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Animal Activities: A First Book in Zoölogy The Rook here presented is the outgrowth of fifteen years 0 teaching the subject to large classes in a high school. Its aim is to interest and guide pupils in the study of living animals. Young people are usually ready to be made acquainted with their immediate neighbors in the animal world, and it is hoped that this book may be of assistance to them. In the choice and arrangement of topics the powers and interests of young students have been kept in view rather than the demands of strictly logical description and exposition. Chapter I outlines the animal kingdom in such a manner as to be useful for reference purposes._ Chapter II gives directions for assisting the student in procuring his own specimens for study. Chapter III describes the activities common to all animals. With Chapter IV work on the Arthropoda begins. Animals of this group are selected for the early part of the work because living specimens can be easily collected and observed in the fall, at which time Zoology is begun in most schools. After the study of the Arthropoda, the book follows the natural order, beginning with the simplest animals and ending with the most complex. In some schools it will doubtless be better to begin with Chapter XI, and study the Arthropoda directly after the chapter on The Earthworm This latter order of subjects is advised when the Zoology course begins in the winter or spring. Excerpt from Links in the Chain: Or Popular Chapters on the Curiosities of Animal Life, by George Kearley With Illustrations by F. W. Keyl If Dr. Livingstone, in the course of his African explorations, were to light upon some such nation of mannikins as that discovered at Lilliput by Mr. Lemuel Gulliver of famous memory, the announcement of the fact could hardly occasion greater surprise and astonishment than was felt by the philosophers of the last century at the remarkable disclosures of the microscope, with respect to the countless multitudes of minute forms of organic life which, unseen by our feeble powers of vision, people the waters of the earth, and swarm around us on every side. The microscope has here revealed the existence of a new world of living beings, before unknown and unsuspected. It has shown that the water of our roadside ditches, and stagnant pools, of our lakes and streams, and of the sea itself, teems with various races of microscopic beings, many of which arc so inconceivably minute, and abound in such amazing profusion, that thousands of them may often be detected in a drop of fluid taken up on the point of a pencil, while, within tho narrow dimensions of a lady's thimble, we might easily collect together a number far exceeding that of the entire human population of the globe. Excerpt from Of Distinguished Animals Portions of all the following chapters appeared in The Times at intervals during the year 1909, under the title of Studies in the Zoological Gardens and they are now published, with amendment and addition, by the courtesy of The Times Publishing Company. In sketches of such a nature it is impossible, when quoting from authorities, to mention all the sources from which one draws without frequent interruption of the thread of ideas and constant annoyance to the reader. At the end of the volume will be found a list of the books from which quotation is made, and to such of the authors as are still within the reach of gratitude I wish to make acknowledgment of my indebtedness. That the following pages have many shortcomings I am well aware. Some of them I should have hoped to remedy if the work of preparation for the press had been done under less serious disadvantages than are indicated by the address below. Excerpt from The World of Animal Life In this opening chapter we shall learn something about the Classification Of Animals; or, in other words, about the way in which animals are arranged by men of science. Now, perhaps you will think that this is a very dull and dry subject, and that it cannot be Of interest to those who know nothing about it. But in reality it is not dull at all. Indeed, it is almost as interesting to find out how different animals are related to one another, as it is to learn about their ways and habits; for in doing so we are led to examine their bodily frames, and to notice how wonderfully every part is suited to the life which the animals have to lead. Some of us may think that it cannot be necessary to know anything about this subject, and that anyone who is really fond of animals can study them quite well, without understanding their natural arrangement. But this, as we shall presently see, is a great mistake. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
