Excerpt from Character and Temperament The subject of this volume is the psychological sources of human quality; this might well be its title or subtitle. The composite term character and temperament has the currency of tradition; the possibility of interpreting it for present-day psychology is an inviting task. The course followed in this survey is substantially without precedent; though there is naturally a considerable com munity of content with volumes bearing a similar title, and with others that consider the analysis, the emotional basis, and the social expression of human nature. The historical phases of this venerable topic are variously in teresting.1 They reflect the persistent desire to penetrate into the mystery of human personality, to seize its secret and direct its for tunes. A related practical motive, more scientifically guided, has given rise to didactic methods of character training; a closely related interest is the vocational one. In all there is the common intent to understand and thus to sound impulse, gauge capacity, direct endeavor, regulate the desires and energies of men. For the whole of human conduct, as of civilization, follows the clew of the endowment, needs, satisfactions, potencies, aspirations of the human mind. As the individual and the social life develop toward the consciousness of purpose, the cultivation of endow ment to secure cherished ends becomes the dominant interest, and in its selective expression reflects the emphasis of native quality. Excerpt from Temper and Temperament, Vol. 1: Or Varieties of Character Nothing is more various, or more difficult to explain, than the origin of intimacies, both those which grow into friendship, and those which kindle into love. Similarity Of taste or of Opinion may perhaps be adduced as the most general foundation of the one, and personal liking of the other. Temper and temperament are amongst the last things taken into consideration in both, except so far as an irritable temper may spoil the harmony of a social evening, or a mild one impart softness to an attractive face. Excerpt from Temper and Temperament, or Varieties of Character, Vol. 2 Animated with the natural but somewhat childish idea, that because she had once been happy there, she must necessarily be happy there again, Louisa had hastened to revisit all her former haunts - the green dell that was once so rich in summer flowers, the high promontory from whence so many distant points could be distinguished, the echoing caves left vacant only by the receding tide, and the masses of broken rock amongst which she had loitered without weariness for hours. Excerpt from Human Temperaments, Vol. 1: Studies in Character Know then thyself, presume not God to scan The proper study of Mankind is Man. Especially Woman, as a witty commentator has added. As Pope stole the whole of the shallow philosophy of his most celebrated essay from Bolingbroke, so he stole three-quarters of this, its most Often qu6ted couplet, from others - half his first line from Pythagoras, and all the second from Warburton. From such a pilferer one would not expect much that is original, but the Essay contains one doctrine that is undoubtedly original with Pope, and it is also undoubtedly erroneous: the doctrine, once universally accepted and now almost forgotten, Of the ruling passion. Excerpt from The Foundations of Personality Man's interest in character is founded on an intensely practical need. In whatsoever relationship we deal with our fellows, we base our intercourse largely on our understanding of their characters. The trader asks concerning his customer, "Is he honest?" and the teacher asks about the pupil, "Is he earnest?" The friend bases his friendship on his good opinion of his friend; the foe seeks to know the weak points in the hated one's make-up; and the maiden yearning for her lover whispers to herself, "Is he true?" Upon our success in reading the character of others, upon our understanding of ourselves hangs a good deal of our life's success or failure. Because the feelings are in part mirrored on the face and body, the experience of mankind has become crystallized in beliefs, opinions and systems of character reading which are based on physiognomy, shape of head, lines of hand, gait and even the method of dress and the handwriting. Some of these all men believe in, at least in part. For example, every one judges character to a certain extent by facial expression, manner, carriage and dress. Excerpt from The Well-Beloved: A Sketch of a Temperament The peninsula carved by Time out of a single stone, whereon most of the following scenes are laid, has been for centuries immemorial the home of a curious and well-nigh distinct people, cherishing strange beliefs and singular customs, now for the most part obsolescent. Fancies, like certain soft-wooded plants which cannot bear the silent inland frosts, but thrive by the sea in the roughest of weather, seem to grow up naturally here, in particular amongst those natives who have no active concern in the labours of the 'Isle.' Hence it is a spot apt to generate a type of personage like the character imperfectly sketched in these pages - a native of natives - whom some may choose to call a fantast (if they honour him with their consideration so far), but whom others may see only as one that gave objective continuity and a name to a delicate dream which in a vaguer form is more or less common to all men, and is by no means new to Platonic philosophers. Excerpt from Alterations of Personality This possible difference of interpretation is clearly recognised, however, by M. Binet, and those who are acquainted with the outlines of the theory of the Nancy school, who make so much of suggestion, will be able to see how strong the case may be made against that point of view. Theories aside, moreover, the reader - be he psychologist, medical man, a mem ber only of the intelligent public - will value the collected resources here presented for the study of the subject and admire the candour and ability with which the author has marshalled them. Excerpt from H. G. Wells: Personality Character Topography The present volume has, I am fully aware, no claim to be considered a complete study of all the writings of H. G. Wells, for the production of such a volume would demand far more time, detail, and learning than have been at my disposal. My object has simply been to present a portrait of Mr. H. G. Wells (it is because he is a man of such immense importance and not for want of courtesy that I have dropped the "Mr." throughout the book), and to present some of the main points of interest in his life and work in a form that will appeal to the "man in the street" who, like myself, may lay no claim to any specialised knowledge of the author, but who nevertheless is desirous of knowing something about a writer who looms so big and ubiquitous in the present day world of letters. Such success as I may have achieved in this direction is due in no small measure to the kind assistance and advice which I have received from almost all whose help I have sought in collecting information for the following pages. Excerpt from Personality and Conduct The primary object of social regulation is to protect the individual members of society from the invasive acts of each other. The need for this regulation is accentuated by the conflicting elements in human nature which require some adjustment.
