Es catedrático en la Morgan State University, donde es Jefe del Departamento de Lenguas y del Programa de Posgrado en Estudios Internacionales, Director del Programa de Estudios Africanos y del Programa de Estudios Latinoamericanos y Caribeños. En el área latinoamericana se especializa en la investigación cultural y literaria de los afrodescendientes. Ha investigado también la literatura africana francófona, la española y el cine africano. Ha publicado, entre otros, Diálogos con Guinea (1996), coautor (con Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo) de Literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial.
