From the city you can visit Brussels, Namur, Liège, Lille, and Luxembourg easily. However, why not stopping in the city for a couple of days to discover its charms and meet its welcoming inhabitants?. The Youth Hostel is a modern accommodation option and only a few meters away from the bus and train stations of Charleroi-Sud.If you come to Charleroi or to Brussels, visiting the Sunday open market on the streets of the center of Charleroi could be an excellent idea. There are hundreds of stalls where you can buy anything from good Belgian food to presents and even have a pastis cocktail. Strolling in the Sunday market of Charleroi is a unique experience worth trying.If you happen to be around in September, then you can be an spectator of the festivities of the city with its Giants of Charleroi and a music band. Also, if you have an afternoon free, perhaps you could visit the town of Châtelet, childhood town of the famous Belgian painter Maigritte, you know, the inventor of "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" and many other surrealist masterpieces.Perhaps the most interesting feature of Charleroi and Châtelet are its inhabitants themselves. After photographing them, one gets the strong feeling that they are polite an gentle. They display patient and friendly manners, often with a natural smile on their faces. Some pictures here prove it. Also, one can sense the famous joie-de-vivre on the streets, especially during the weekends and on Sundays, on the street bars.These pictures are intended to create a memory of Charleroi and Châtelet for the future generations.I hope that you will enjoy contemplating these images as much as I enjoyed taking them.

I would like to present here a collection of 180 pictures taken in the Belgian city of Charleroi during 2019. There are also pictures of the smaller cities of Châtelet, Marchienne-au-Pont and Louvain-la-Neuve.I have had the pleasure of living among the carolos (so are called the inhabitants of Charleroi) during two months in the Spring and Summer of 2019 and I was so delighted by my encounters and experiences, that I decided to publish a collection of photographs, which I hope will constitute a part of their memories in the future. Perhaps in the distant future they will look back at this time and say to themselves: they were interesting humans of a long forgotten age.You will find images of the festivities of the Wallonie, the region of Charleroi, as well as other interesting images of the city, its people, buildings, monuments, bridges, even some animals are shown.It is a pleasure to take pictures of the inhabitants of Charleroi, as they display a welcoming and relaxed character. You will see many smiles here, many interesting moments. I particularly like the moment I captured of one little girl: She is reading avidly a comic strip...with her doll aside, looking as if dead. I would call this picture Death of a Doll, in the sense that the girl is quickly loosing interest in the doll to grow up and to become a child interested in another type of fantasy, comic strips. When a girl looses interest in her doll, this one will loose her voice and begin to die, metaphorically speaking.I also have to thank the people that appear on this book and that allowed me to photographed them. It speaks volumes of their good nature and strong personality, that they accepted to be photographed by a complete stranger like me. I hope that I have honoured their trust by capturing their good personalities... perhaps for the future generations. That is my wish in any case.You will also find The Giants of Charleroi, people singing, people dancing, wonderful artists performing, musicians, bikers, cyclists, industrial plants, new and old buildings...The book also contains many examples of interesting graffiti, which I found relevant and worth preserving by means of photographs.I hope that you will enjoy this image-travel to Charleroi and perhaps encourage you to visit the city in the future, together with this welcoming country, Belgium.
