Most scientists live in a "publish or perish" environment, but few would describe themselves as brilliant (or enthusiastic) writers. Coming to the aid of all those wishing to improve the quality of their scientific writing — established researchers and aspiring students alike — three experienced authors/scientists from differing backgrounds and cultures have compiled this classic guide. This new edition has been completely revised to reflect dramatic changes in communication over the past 15 years. The primary emphasis is on writing techniques, accurate expression, adherence to accepted standards, and above all clarity, but the authors also venture into communication technology and organizational as well as ethical aspects of science. Numerous appendices and a particularly comprehensive index complete this highly useful book. "The authors have a passion, not only for clarity and economy of style, but also for precision and consistency." —Nature "A wealth of information contained in a single book of manageable proportions. Students reporting on a simple laboratory experiment and their teachers preparing a paper or lecture will both find this book a constant companion." —European Science Editing "The book under review claims, 'we know of no book as broad in its coverage, as critical in its analysis of existing trends, and as international in its scope'. This claim is immodest but accurate." —Trends in Pharmacological Sciences

The Web is undergoing revolutionary changes – its second generation is emerging. The key player in the new generation is not HTML but XML (this is why it is also known as "the XML-based Web"). If the appearance of web pages is a major concern in the first generation, then the meaning (or semantics) of information on the Web is the focus of the second generation, which is why it is also called "the Semantic Web." The new edition of the pioneering monograph on Visualising the Semantic Web has undergone a number of changes in order to reflect recent research results, web standards, developments and trends. In this new edition, 2 chapters have been removed, 4 new chapters have been added and the 10 remaining chapters have been completely revised and updated.

This book, suitable for IS/IT courses and self study, presents a comprehensive coverage of the technical as well as business/management aspects of mobile computing and wireless communications. Instead of one narrow topic, this classroom tested book covers the major building blocks (mobile applications, mobile computing platforms, wireless networks, architectures, security, and management) of mobile computing and wireless communications. Numerous real-life case studies and examples highlight the key points. The book starts with a discussion of m-business and m-government initiatives and examines mobile computing applications such as mobile messaging, m-commerce, M-CRM, M-portals, M-SCM, mobile agents, and sensor applications. The role of wireless Internet and Mobile IP is explained and the mobile computing platforms are analyzed with a discussion of wireless middleware, wireless gateways, mobile application servers, WAP, i-mode, J2ME, BREW, Mobile Internet Toolkit, and Mobile Web Services. The wireless networks are discussed at length with a review of wireless communication principles, wireless LANs with emphasis on 802.11 LANs, Bluetooth, wireless sensor networks, UWB (Ultra Wideband), cellular networks ranging from 1G to 5G, wireless local loops, FSO (Free Space Optics), satellites communications, and deep space networks. The book concludes with a review of the architectural, security, and management/support issues and their role in building, deploying and managing wireless systems in modern settings.

This volume includes the papers accepted for the First International Conference on Electronic Commerce and Web Technologies, which was held in Greenwich, UK, on September 4-6, 2000. The conference is the first of a series of planned conferences on these topics with the goal to bring together researchers from academia, practitioners and commercial developers from industry, and users to assess current methodologies and explore new ideas in e-commerce and web technology. The conference attracted 120 papers from all over the world and each paper was reviewed by at least three program committee members for its merit. The program committee finally selected 42 papers for presentation and inclusion in these conference proceedings. The conference program consisted of 14 technical sessions and two invited talks spread over three days. The regular sessions covered topics such as web application design, intellectual property rights, security and fairness, distributed organizations, web usage analysis, modelling of web applications, electronic commerce success factors, electronic markets, XML, web mining, electronic negotiation, integrity and performance, facilitating electronic commerce, and mobile electronic commerce. There were two invited addresses at the conference. The first was by Anthony Finkelstein, University College London, UK on "A Foolish Consistency: Technical Challenges in Consistency Management". This was a common address to the DEXA, the DaWaK and the EC-Web attendees. The second talk was by Paul Timmers, European Commission, Information Technologies Directorate on "The Role of Technology for the e-Economy".
