A visit to Grandmother’s house has never been so frightening. . . . Charlie and Georgie Oughtt have been sent to visit their Grandmother Pearl, and this troubles Charlie for three reasons. The first is that he’s an exceptionally nervous twelve-year-old boy, and he worries about everything. The second is that the other children in his neighborhood who pay visits to their grandmothers never seem to return. And the third is that Charlie and Georgie don’t have any grandmothers. Upon their arrival, all of Charlie’s concerns are confirmed, as “Grandmother Pearl” quickly reveals herself to be something much more gruesome than even Charlie’s most outlandish fears could have predicted. He and Georgie are thrust into a creepy underworld created from stolen nightmares, where monsters disguised as grandmothers serve an ancient, evil queen by holding children captive as they slowly sap each one of their memories and dreams. But something is different about Charlie. His worrisome nature, so often a burden, proves an asset in this frightening world. Will he be able to harness this newfound power to defeat the queen and save his sister?

I didn't want Mrs Cyclopolos to explode. I just wanted a paper round. My name is Charlie Ian Duncan. I will be 12 on 2 February. I have written this history of my war with the grannies because I need everyone to know that I didn't mean for Mrs Cyclopolos to blow up. I just wanted a paper round. When I say 'my war with the grannies', I really mean the war I waged alongside my best friend Hils, my second-best-friend Rashid, Peter the Iraqi who isn't afraid of anything (well apart from one thing), Warren and his magical bike TwelveSpeed and those crazy people we met underground. The grannies started it when I asked them about a paper round and they sprayed me in the face with rooster brand chilli sauce and made me think that I was dead. Hils and I decided to go to war with them but then I discovered one of the grannies had a glass eye and I wasn't sure if it was okay to go to war against someone with a glass eye but then I discovered that the granny with the glass eye could pinch bricks in half, turn her snot-covered hankies into deadly throwing weapons and possessed a truly terrible device called the Gnashing Gnet. It's all true. Especially the bit about me not wanting anyone to blow up

Reaching Reluctant Young Readers written by Rob Reid and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-09 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Reaching Reluctant Young Readers features 150 middle-grade books. Each profiled title has the potential to hook the reluctant reader and lure them to read the entire book. To specifically encourage elementary and middle-school-age reluctant children to read, there is first a pitch to get the reader’s attention. That is followed by a short reading passage to “set the hook” and encourage the young person to read the rest of the book on their own. Further, the book contains several hundred additional recommended titles. The books selected for this collection were chosen following the criteria of reluctant reader books created by the Quick Picks committee sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association. While these guidelines were designed for young adult books, they also work well for middle-grade books. The criteria include: clear writing (no convoluted long sentences with sophisticated vocabulary), high interest “hook” in the first few pages, well-defined characters, interesting plot, and familiar themes.

Grandmothers written by Marguerite Guzman Bouvard and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-09-01 with Literary Collections categories.

This collection of stories and vignettes-a multicultural anthology of women from diverse ethnic backgrounds—reveals how the mantle of culture and family is passed from woman to woman. As they vividly explode stereotypes, the pieces illustrate not only the courage of older women, but the received wisdom of younger women. Granddaughters remember their grandmothers as extraordinary women at once defiant and tradition bound, loving and stubbornly dogmatic. Some reinvent their grandmothers, others discover them for the first time. For example, Mary Helen Washington unmasks the word "freedpeople" in her grandmother's story to reveal the widespread aggression against supposedly freed slaves. Beryl Minkle's Bubba tells a tale of cultural and religious injustice that includes the oppression of women. Noted Native American writer Paula Gunn Allen reflects on her different cultural threads, as she searches for her Lebanese great-grandmother for whom she was named. Contributors include: Paula Gunn Allen, Marilou Awiakta, Robin Becker, Marguerite Guzman Bouvard, Laurence B. Calver, Christina Chiu, Michelle Cloonan, Martha Collins, Jean Gould, Padma Hejmadi, Anna Kimmage, Florence Ladd, Monty S. Leitch, Aimee Liu, Beryl Minkle, Naomi Shihab Nye, Patricia Traxler, Ana Aloma Velilla, Annelise Wagner, Mary Helen Washington

Living on the banks of the turbulent Fraser River, the Nlaka'pamux people of Spuzzum have a long history of contact with non-aboriginal peoples. They watched as Hudson's Bay Company employees hacked a path through the mountains for the fur brigades, and over time they found themselves in the path of the Cariboo road, the CPR, and virtually every commercial and province-building initiative undertaken in the region over the past two centuries. Juxtaposing historical narratives and cultural interpretation from the community of Spuzzum with archival information, this book explores the history of Spuzzum in the light of concepts central to the Nlaka'pamux definition of family, political authority, land, and cosmos.

"This is an incredible story. As long as you don't mind getting kicked in the gut, shedding a few tears, and having your heart squeezed at the pain the characters go through, you'll love this book. It's simple, yet elegant. Painful, yet heartwarming. It is, put simply, an incredible story told well." Mark Paxon - author of One Night in Bridgeport'You know how sometimes, you have these moments when everything in your life just falls into place in one perfect moment and you look around and think, this is it; this is what life is about, this exact, perfect moment in life that I'm living right now. You may not be rich, or have a job you love. But something in your life, your family, a friend, your dog who loves you unconditionally, or your partner/wife/husband/lover, something or someone just occasionally breaks through the stresses of the everyday bullshit and makes you stop and smile and think....oh yes. This, this moment right here, is what it's all about. That's how I felt every second of every minute when I was with Pearl. She is the stars, the sun, and the moon. The butterflies, the rainbows, the puppies, the music, the chocolate, the soft cushions, spring flowers. The jacket that keeps you warm on a cold winter's day. She is everything that is beautiful in this world.'Charlie is exactly the kind of guy fathers want their daughters to bring home. Reliable, loyal and devastatingly sweet, any girl would be lucky to have him. Or so his mum frequently says. In the small coastal New Zealand town where he was born and grew up though, love has so far managed to elude him, and he passes his days behind the counter of the local bookshop working for a boss suffering from the early onslaught of dementia. Then fiery Pearl blows into the bay, nursing a broken heart and a tragic secret. She's determined to see out the winter in her Grandmothers run down beach house, with nothing but wine and the cry of gulls to disturb her solitude.Their paths cross after she falls asleep in the bookshop, and their resulting love will devastate a town and leave no one untouched. Charlie and Pearl is a story of unconventional love; of finding that spare part you never knew you were missing, and of what happens when love is simply not enough.

But when a number of people mysteriously begin to disappear in Widowsbury, the girls work together, along with Steffen Weller, son of the cook at Rudyard School for Boys, to find out who is behind the abductions. Will they be able to save Widowsbury from a sinister 12-year-old curse?
