Winner of the 2011 Edgar Award for Best Critical/Biographical Book and Shortlisted for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography: "An ingenious and absorbing book…It will permanently change the way we tell this troubled yet gripping story." —Jonathan Spence Hailed as “irrepressibly spirited and entertaining” (Pico Iyer, Time) and “a fascinating cultural survey” (Paul Devlin, Daily Beast), this provocative first biography of Charlie Chan presents American history in a way that it has never been told before. Yunte Huang ingeniously traces Charlie Chan from his real beginnings as a bullwhip-wielding detective in territorial Hawaii to his reinvention as a literary sleuth and Hollywood film icon. Huang finally resurrects the “honorable detective” from the graveyard of detested postmodern symbols and reclaims him as the embodiment of America’s rich cultural diversity. The result is one of the most critically acclaimed books of the year and a “deeply personal . . . voyage into racial stereotyping and the humanizing force of story telling” (Donna Seaman, Los Angeles Times).

"""Charlie Chan Carries On"" -- the 1931 Fox motion picture starring Warner Oland as Chan-- is now considered a ""lost"" film (the original film materials were destroyed in a vault fire.) Unless a copy surfaces in some remote corner of the world, as happened with ""Charlie Chan in Paris,"" this original screenplay is the closest Chan fans will come to seeing the original film. (There is also a Portuguese-language version called ""Eran Trece"" -- ""There Were Thirteen"" -- with a different cast. The 1940 film, ""Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise,"" starring Sidney Toler, Oland's successor in the role of Charlie Chan, was also based on the same novel, but with a different script.) This addition to the series was penned by Barry Conners and Philip Klein, with added material suggested by Earl Derr Biggers, and based loosely on Biggers' original novel, ""Behind That Curtain."" This early work by Earl Derr Biggers was originally published in 1930 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. “Charlie Chan Carries On” is the fifth novel in the Charlie Chan series. Inspector Duff, a Scotland Yard detective and friend of Chan's, first introduced in Behind That Curtain, is pursuing a murderer on an around-the-world voyage; so far, there have been murders in London, France, Italy and Japan. While his ship is docked in Honolulu, the detective is shot and wounded by his quarry; though he survives, he is unable to continue with the cruise, and Chan takes his place instead. Earl Derr Biggers was born on 26th August 1884 in Warren, Ohio, USA. Biggers received his further education at Harvard University, where he developed a reputation as a literary rebel, preferring the popular modern authors, such as Rudyard Kipling and Richard Harding Davis to the established figures of classical literature. Following in their footsteps upon graduating, he himself began a career as a popular writer, penning humorous articles and reviews for the Boston Traveler. While on holiday in Hawaii, Biggers heard tales of a real-life Chinese detective operating in Honolulu, named Chang Apana. This inspired him to create his most enduring legacy in the character of super-sleuth Charlie Chan. The first Chan story “The House Without a Key” (1925) was published as a serialised story in the Saturday Evening Post and then released as a novel in the same year. Biggers went on to write five more Chan novels and all were licensed for movie adaptations by Fox Films. These films were hugely popular with several different actors taking the lead role of Chan. Eventually; over 40 films were produced featuring the character. Biggers only saw the early on-screen successes of Charlie Chan due to his death at the age of only 48 from a heart attack in April 1933.

Charlie Chan is a Chinese Hero, solving mysteries with wit and courage. Biggers created the character because he disliked the negative stereotypes around Asian people at the time. S. T. Karnick writes in the National Review that Chan is "a brilliant detective with understandably limited facility in the English language [whose] powers of observation, logic, and personal rectitude and humility made him an exemplary, entirely honourable character. The books have been adapted to television and film, creating characters and stories that adults and children alike love. This Omnibus Edition of the six Charlie Chan Novels is a must-read for every Charlie Chan fan: The House Without a Key (1925), The Chinese Parrot (1926), Behind that Curtain (1928), The Black Camel (1929), Charlie Chan Carries On (1930), Keeper of the Keys (1932)

This collection of early work by Earl Derr Biggers was originally published between 1925 and 1928 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "The Charlie Chan Collection - Volume I" contains the first three colourful tales of the original Charlie Chan. In "The House Without a Key" we are introduced to Chan, a corpulent father of nine, as he uses all his considerable faculties to solve the case of a murdered father and a missing jewel box. In "The Chinese Parrot," Chan dons a disguise and goes undercover to solve a complex case involving a fake identity, a kidnapping and a murder. The last story in this volume, "Behind That Curtain," tells the story of the former head of Scotland Yard, a detective who is pursuing the long-cold trail of a murderer. While on holiday in Hawaii, Biggers heard tales of a real-life Chinese detective operating in Honolulu, named Chang Apana. This inspired him to create his most enduring legacy in the character of super-sleuth Charlie Chan. Biggers wrote six Chan novels in total and all were licensed for movie adaptations by Fox Films. These films were hugely popular with several different actors taking the lead role of Chan. They were even a success in China where the appeal of a character from the country being the hero instead of the villain appealed to film-goers. Eventually; over 40 films were produced featuring the character. Biggers only saw the early on-screen successes of Charlie Chan due to his death at the age of only 48 from a heart attack in April 1933.
