La critique ayant généralement négligé le travail du réalisateur proprement dit, il a paru judicieux à l'auteur de se demander comment Chaplin concevait sa démarche, et comment il composait ses films, à partir de la figure qu'il invente : Charlot. L'exceptionnelle carrière de Chaplin, qui débute quasiment avec l'histoire du cinématographe, lui permet de connaître le passage du muet au parlant. Ce bouleversement technique révolutionnaire rencontre d'abord ses farouches réticences, mais il le contraint finalement à repenser son écriture et son personnage mythique. Mariange Ramozzi-Doreau s'efforce de saisir les liens qu'entretiennent, dès l'origine, Charlot et l'esthétique chaplinienne, et d'analyser les métamorphoses auxquelles on assiste lorsque Chaplin écrit pour le cinéma parlant, à partir de 1940. Elle tend à montrer la compétence technique du cinéaste : l'originalité de Chaplin est d'avoir pensé son art en le fondant sur le persona unique de Charlot. dont lui seul était à même de réaliser les avatars les plus insoupçonnés. L'ouvrage voudrait aussi faire partager au lecteur l'engouement de son auteur pour cette figure haute en couleurs d'un cinéma drôle et pétillant d'intelligence.
