Excerpt from The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer Our refusal to reduce the spelling of the manuscripts to a dead level of philological correctness - were this attainable - has compelled us to use an unobtrusive dot to indicate when the letter e is to be fully sounded. This is the less to be regretted as Chaucer's usage in this respect is not quite so rigidly uniform as it is sometimes represented, and few readers will be inclined to grumble at this help which we have endeavoured to offer as modestly as possible. Excerpt from In the Days of Chaucer Most prosy way and have no gifts as story-tellers; but Chaucer was so much a man of his time, knew so many kinds Of people, was so much alive to everything that went on about him, had such a fund of humor, and was so full Of gayety, that it is impossible to think Of him as other than a delightful companion, to spend the day with whom one would have walked a long way. Excerpt from Selections From Chaucer In preparing this volume the editor has endeavored to reduce to a minimum the apparatus necessary to accompany the reading of selections from Chaucer. The introduction is by no means so long as it might have been made; the notes are not so complete as would be expected if the book were to be used by specialists in Middle English. The editor suggests that the first three sections of the introduction be read, rapidly at the very outset; after some' sequamtadobfl has fbeen gained with the text, these sections may be read again more carefully. The sections pn.' Prg nunciation, on Inflection, and on Versification should of course be mastered early; the best my. Seems to be to require them to be studied in connection with very short passages from the text, so that each principle may be immediately applied. Since the vocabulary of the Prologue is distinctly difficult some teachers may prefer to begin the reading with the comparatively easy Nun's Priest's Tale. In this way the language Will seem less remote from the language of Shakspere, and atten tion may be centered upon the difficulties of pronunci ation and metre. Excerpt from The Chaucer Story Book T has been somewhat the fashion of late to declare I that the difficulty of reading Chaucer has been greatly overestimated. Probably it has - for some peo ple. Chaucer, compared with Beowulf, for instance, is play. For one who knows a little French, a little Ger man, and a little Latin, who has a shadowy recollection of Grimm's Law, a good memory for obsolete and half obsolete expressions, and a natural talent for discovering the gist of a word, no matter how it is spelled, it is a simple matter to read Chaucer. Doubtless, it would be better if every one would read everything in the exact form which it took in its author's mind, the Canterbury Tales included; but, though most people claim to be able to appreciate humor, pathos, charac ter-drawing, mischievous satire, and love of nature, and though all these qualifies are found' abundantly in the poetry of Chaucer, never met man. Excerpt from The Language and Metre of Chaucer And for ther is so greet diversitee In Englissh and in wry tinge of our tonge. So preye I God that noon miswryte thee, Ne thee mismeetre for defaute of tonge. The little book herewith offered to the friends of Chaucer and of the English language is the result of several years of study not originally undertaken with a view to a publication of this nature. The grammatical and metrical outlines which form the basis of the present work were planned, and in course of time expanded and elaborated, for my own use and the benefit of those who attended my lectures. At the beginning of the present year I hap pened to hear that a younger colleague intended to write a Chaucer Grammar. This circumstance determined me, in the interest of a rational division of labour, to bring to light what had for years lain hidden in my desk. I, of course, at once communicated my plan to the scholar who was the unintentional occasion of my decision.
