Excerpt from In the Days of Chaucer Most prosy way and have no gifts as story-tellers; but Chaucer was so much a man of his time, knew so many kinds Of people, was so much alive to everything that went on about him, had such a fund of humor, and was so full Of gayety, that it is impossible to think Of him as other than a delightful companion, to spend the day with whom one would have walked a long way. Excerpt from Chaucer Decade since-his death. But since Tyrwhitt began his labours, nowjust a century ago, one great section of Chaucer's work, the Cafl/erbufy Tales, has been accessible in a fairly correct form, and thanks to the labours of the Chaucer sociecty - alike to its unweary ing director and the students, English, American, and German; who have come to his help - thc materials for a sound text of the whole of the poet's rl-zs, and much useful information about his life and studies, are at last available. To-day Chaucer has} more readers and more lovers than at any previ ouse time, and every year increases their number. But oh] errors about him are still potent. Poems, for the most part quite unworthy of him, for which in the'sixteenth century party feeling or editorial caprice sought the cloak of his name, are still attributed to him, and the story of his life is still obscured by. Mischievous fictions. The controversies thus created are not yet dead, and one unhappy result of them is that this little book cannot be written qiiite so simply as might be wished. It is not always enough merely to set down what is known about Chaucer, we have also to show how and why it is known, lest the next tithe a contradictory statement is encountered it may seem to possess equal weight. Only a very dull person will allow these details to usurp ah unreal importance, but for the present we cannot wholly do without them. Excerpt from Stories From Chaucer In days gone by there reigned in Athens a brave and noble duke named Theseus. Such a great warrior was he that at that time there was none greater under the sun. Many a rich country did he conquer by his courage and wisdom in warfare and add to his dominions of Athens, and amongst them was the kingdom of Scythia, inhabited by a race of women warriors called Amazons. Geoffrey Chaucer is one of the most notable English poets of all time and is sometimes referred to as the Father of English literature. He lived during the fourteenth century and was a noted author, philosopher, alchemist, and civil servant. His most well known work is The Canterbury Tales, which are published here as part of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Annotated and Accented - with Illustrations of English Life in Chaucer's Time. Saunders' book is not merely a collection of Chaucer's work. Rather, the editor and author has included nearly two hundred pages of contextual information on the life of Chaucer, and the characters, settings, and time periods that are detailed in The Canterbury Tales. Specifically, these introductory chapters are devoted to discussions of The Tabard, chivalry, religion, professional men, and trade and commerce. Following this introduction, the stories that together form The Canterbury Tales are presented. Structured as a Pilgrim story-telling contest, these tales are written in both verse and traditional prose. The tales are highly critical of English society and in particular the role of the Church. In all fourteen works from The Canterbury Tales are included in this collection, along with four of Chaucer's works from other collections. Each story is presented alongside remarks from John Saunders, who helps to analyze the story for the modern reader. Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Annotated and Accented - with Illustrations of English Life in Chaucer's Time is a collection of some of the most revered and influential writing in the history of the English language. This book is a must read for anybody who appreciates modern literature and is interested in the work of one of its founding fathers. Excerpt from A Temporary Preface to the Six-Text Edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Vol. 1: Attempting to Show the True Order of the Tales, and the Days and Stages of the Pilgrimage, Etc; Etc If I did not remember the comments of this same journal, and of the Times, on American men, manners, and things during the war, I should say that this was as gross a piece of insult to a nation as I had ever seen in print. But this I will say, that any thing approaching to it in ignorant brutality I have never seen in any American newspaper laying the smallest claim to respect ability, or anything in any American newspaper so well calculated to excite hatred between the two countries. When people in England hold up their hands over the part played by press writers in fostering enmity between the 'two kindred peoples, ' they must therefore fix their eyes, not on New York, but on London. Excerpt from The Chaucer Canon: With a Discussion of the Works Associated With the Name of Geoffrey Chaucer The subject of the present volume is an examination of the Chaucer Canon. All the pieces that have been at any time associated with his name are here considered; and various tests are given whereby his genuine works can be distinguished from the rest. Much that is here said is necessarily repeated from what I have already advanced in my six-volume edition of Chaucer and in the supplementary volume entitled Chaucerian Pieces; but I have also taken the opportunity, whilst collecting many scattered observations that have been previously made, of introducing a few new suggestions and arguments. In particular, the account here given of the striking parallel between Chaucers grammatical usages and the regular employment of various grammatical suffixes in the unassailable text of the Ormulum is, to the best of my belief, wholly new, and adds much firmness and certainty to the whole argument. It is true that Tyrwhitt (in note 69 to his Essay on Chaucers Language) long ago pointed out the value of the practice of Orm, the most authentic metrical composer that we have in our antient language, but he did not give any detailed account of the conclusions to be drawn from it. The argument which I adduce is briefly this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from In the Days of Shakespeare There are many aids to the study of poets and of their works in these days, and, in many cases, these aids are so intelligently prepared that they are, for their purpose, worthy of all praise. For the most part, however, these aids deal mainly, often exclusively, with matters presented by the text; with the exact meanings of the words, with references and allusions of all kinds, so that everything appears in clear light except the poet himself. Now the poet is the chief factor in his work, the determining factor. To know him is to bring to his work the secret of its power, of its charm, of its unique quality, whatever that may be.
