The most complete of all remaining surviving fragments sections of The Canterbury Tales, the First Fragment contains some of Chaucer's most widely enjoyed work. In The General Prologue, Chaucer introduces his pilgrims through a set of speaking portraits, drawn with a clarity that makes no attempt to conceal their peculiarities. The four tales that follow - those of the Knight, Miller, Reeve and Cook - reveal a wide variety of human preoccupations: whether chivalrous, romantic or simply sexual. Brilliantly bawdy and subtly complex, each of these tales is alive with Chaucer's skills as a poet, storyteller and creator of comedy.

"The Canterbury Tales and Other Poems" is a collection of literary works by Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the most important figures in English literature. Compiled in the late 14th century, Chaucer's masterpiece, "The Canterbury Tales," stands as the centerpiece of this collection. "The Canterbury Tales" is a series of stories told by a diverse group of pilgrims traveling to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. Each pilgrim tells a tale that reflects their social status, personality, and worldview, offering readers a panoramic view of medieval English society. In addition to "The Canterbury Tales," Chaucer's collection includes a variety of other poems and shorter works. These range from love poems and moral allegories to dream visions and philosophical treatises, showcasing Chaucer's versatility as a poet and storyteller. Chaucer's writing is characterized by its vivid characterization, keen social observation, and mastery of poetic form. His use of Middle English vernacular, combined with rich imagery and humor, makes his work accessible and engaging for modern readers.

Essay from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Bayreuth, course: British Survey, language: English, abstract: The Canterbury Tales take place in England of the 14th century. It is spring time and a group of 30 people from all social classes is gathering together in the Tabard Inn in Southwark near London to plan their pilgrimage to Becket’s tomb at Canterbury. To kill time during their journey a story-telling contest is created. Each pilgrim has to tell a story and the winner of the best story will get a free supper. The Canterbury Tales are structured as a frame narrative. The General Prologue mainly builds the frame where all the characters are introduced and the story-telling competition was invented. Its structure is very simple. After an introduction in lines 1-34, the narrator begins the series of portraits (lines 35-719). Afterwards the Host suggests the tale-telling contest which is then accepted by the pilgrims (lines 720-821). In the following the pilgrims gather and decide that the Knight should tell the first story. The frame in which the story is embedded has a long tradition. Boccaccio’s “Decamerone” was for example written in this style and Chaucer read it when visiting Italy. Originally Chaucer wanted each of the pilgrims to tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. This would have led to 120 single stories, but he never finished this enormous work. In fact there are only 23 tales, some of which are even incomplete.

Storyteller is the third collection of stories written in verse by David Hamilton. Each story is told by a historical figure to convey allegory, symbolism and metaphor, with the author as the overarching narrator. The book takes readers on a journey through imaginative worlds where the reader witnesses experiences and meets people they would meet in their own lives. “Listeners live this as a communal story, a shared history that makes us part of it. Isolation is filled in, emotions link the community. Would our communal lives Make an interesting play?” David’s unique collection aligns contemporary content with traditional poetic forms, linking the two together to provide a social commentary on the modern world. Such technique can be witness in ‘The Lotus Eaters’, a story that first appeared in Homer’s Odyssey. Circe’s transformation of men into swine is here presented as escapism through drugs. David has also updated other traditional stories such as Reynard the Fox to tell the story from the fox’s point of view, and Chaucer’s The Hall of Fame. The collection concludes with a sequence of seven Pastorals, featuring myths and deities from classical times telling practical stories of husbandry. David’s latest collection of poetry is wordly and not academic, and presents readers with a unique combination of traditional forms and contemporary content. The book will appeal to fans of poetry, as well as readers that have enjoyed David’s previous works, King Alfred's Jewel (Matador, 2014) and Concept Poems (Matador, 2016). David has contributed essays to the New English Review and Storyteller is advertised in the Literary Review.
