Mit der Monographie "Chemie der höheren Pilze" legt der österreichische Chemiker Julius Zellner ein umfangreiches Kompendium vor, in welchem alle Pilzarten außer Bakterien, Schimmel- und Hefepilzen behandelt werden. Auf den 257 Seiten des Werkes liefert der Autor dabei eine fundierte Darstellung des Forschungsstandes der Pilzchemie, die zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung seit etwa 100 Jahre bestand. In 22 ausführlichen Kapiteln verortet Zellner die bekannten Pilzarten in einer chemischen Systematik; zusätzlich gibt der Autor zum besseren Verständnis eine genaue chemische Darstellung jener Stoffe, die für die Pilze jeweils charakteristisch sind. Das Buch schließt mit einem umfangreichen Sachregister zum leichteren Gebrauch des Werkes. Der Autor: Julius Zellner (1869 - 1935), österreichischer Chemiker, war Professor der Chemie an der Staatsgewerbeschule (Höhere Ingenieurschule) in Bielitz im heutigen Polen. Bei diesem Werk handelt es sich um einen sorgfältig nachbearbeiteten Nachdruck der Originalausgabe des Buches aus dem Jahre 1907.

Excerpt from Chemie der Hoheren Pilze: Eine Monographie ln der vorliegenden Schrift habe ich den Versuch gemacht, die Resultate ubersichtlich darzustellen, welche die chemische Forschung bei der Untersuchung der hoheren Pilze bisher gewonnen hat. Was den Begriff hohere Pilze anbetrifft, wie ich ihn in der Einleitung genauer darlege, so weiss ich wohl, dass sich manches Bedenken dagegen erheben lasst. Da aber schliesslich alle Einteilungen in der Wissenschaft mehr oder weniger Notbehelfe sind, so hoffe ich, dass man die mehr auf praktische Bedurfnisse als auf wissenschaftliche Grunde gestutzte Umgrenzung jenes Begriffes wenigstens als ein vorlaufiges Auskunftsmittel gelten lassen wird. Ich war bestrebt, das vorliegende literarische Material bei moglichster Kurze doch soweit als tunlich erschopfend wiederzugeben. Vollstandigkeit in der Anfuhrung einschlagiger Arbeiten habe ich angestrebt, aber wohl kaum erreicht, wie es bei dem gegenwartigen Umfang der wissenschaftlichen Literatur, besonders auf dem Grenzgebiet zweier Wissenschaften auch nicht anders zu erwarten ist. Auch war es mir trotz vieler Bemuhungen nicht immer moglich, aus den Originalarbeiten zu schopfen, sondern ich war bisweilen gezwungen, mich mit Referaten zu begnugen. Dadurch sind naturlich gewisse Ungleichmassigkeiten in der Darstellung wie auch in der Nomenklatur der Pilzspezies, hier und da auch kleine Unvollstandigkeiten in den Zitaten bedingt worden, Fehler, welche ich selbst leichter bemangeln als verbessern und nur damit entschuldigen kann, dass ich unter den obwaltenden Umstanden mein Bestes getan zu haben glaube.
