Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay's myriad inlets in summer, it is hard to imagine that, come January, icebreakers may be plowing the waters you cruised in July. When portions of the Great Shellfish Bay are iced up, the flow of commerce is impeded. At the turn of the nineteenth century, with the center of the new nation's government established it its arms, a frozen Bay meant that the United States' emergence to a status on par with the foremost nations of the world might be painfully slow. James Foster chronicles the disasters and pitfalls, large and small, that come with the coldest of winters.

Gib’s Odyssey is the true story of an extraordinary man, Gib Peters, and his solo journey along the Intracoastal Waterway from Key West to New York and back while suffering the ravages of Lou Gehrig’s disease. On an astonishing six-month voyage, Gib and his boat, Ka-Ching, encounter everything from an incompetent sailboat captain who lets his tow-rope wrap around Ka-Ching’s propellers and when he dives into the water to cut it loose accidently stabs himself with his knife, to the Navy and Coast Guard Zodiacs rushing to stop him from entering a naval bombardment zone. Gib carries out epic searches for his two kittens when they go AWOL at an Atlantic City marina and when one later falls overboard. All the while, he is forced to cope with increasing levels of paralysis, steering the boat home with his feet and unable to speak. Authored by Gib’s neurologist, Gib’s Odyssey is told in Gib’s own voice through a series of e-mails and articles he wrote for the Key West Citizen. Part travelogue, part soul-searching meditation, it is the uplifting and sometimes hilarious story of one man’s conquest of death and his profound insights into life.

Dreams Can Come True written by Hugh French and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06 with Cruising categories.

Many years ago, my wife Millie, (now deceased) and I dreamed of living and cruising on a boat for an extended period of time. This book takes you through the planning process, the preparations prior to actually leaving family and friends behind, and buying a suitable boat on which to live and cruise. It is not meant to be a procedural guide; rather it is a record of places we visited and the extraordinary folks we met along the way. It looks at the day-to-day activities of living aboard and the unanticipated demands that go with the lifestyle. Follow us as we begin our journey in Florida near Sarasota, and proceed to Fort Myers, Key West and Fort Pierce. We embarked from Fort Pierce on a cruise north on the Atlantic ICW to the Upper Chesapeake Bay, returning to Punta Gorda, FL. From there we embarked on two other passages: to the Bahamas and across the Gulf of Mexico to Gulfport, MS . If a dream like this has ever crossed your mind, you may decide after reading this that living and cruising on a boat is for you too. Make it happen. Bon voyage!

North America's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay, is fed by more than 150 major rivers and streams from parts of six states and the District of Columbia. Two hundred miles long, with a shoreline that includes more than 11,500 miles of tributaries, the bay has been a major economic lifeline since pre-Columbian times. As such, it is not surprising that the bay has seen its share of shipwrecks over the centuries-from small and large vessels foundering in storms, like the Levin J. Marvel, to naval and merchant ships of all sizes lost to collisions, fires, and wars, such as the US Coast Guard cutter Cuyahoga. The actual number of shipwrecks will never be known, but at least 3,000 in the bay and its tributaries have been documented-either in archives or newspapers or through underwater archaeology. While some wrecks saw great loss of life, others fortunately did not.
