Clarkl is a planet of cold days and even colder nights. Although Clarkl's star is not visible from Earth, Clarkl's advanced technology allows its natives to visit Earth and take Earthlings back to Clarkl for work. In the early 2070s, the American government entered into a contract with the people of Clarkl to manage and staff farms and kitchens to feed some of the large numbers of Clarkl natives who are faced with the planet's ever-present famine. The American government received certain critical minerals from Clarkl, and the Clarklians received the services of farmers and cooks. This novel presents the diaries of five Americans who went to Clarkl for work in the dining rooms. They left troubling problems on Earth to go to Clarkl for a guaranteed monthly income and a decade of hard work. The diaries discuss the ugly Clarkl natives, with all seven sexes described. Three imaginative illustrations by Lance Jackson show these natives. Carmen, Mary THE CLARKL SOUP KITCHENS AuthorHouse (277 pp.) November 2004 ISBN: 1-4184-8031-2 The cold planet of Clarkl, a place of .few comforts and extensive famine,. serves as the backdrop for this humorous, pseudo-allegorical tale.

Excerpt from Chess Player's Chronicle Scene - The Philidorian Chess Rooms. (Time, 1 o'clock p.m.) Professor Long is sipping a cup of coffee and rending the Era. Doctor MacIvor is sitting at a Chess-board, playing over a game between Morphy and Thompson, from the last number of the American Chess Monthly, which is lying before him. At the other end of the room, Messrs. Behnes and Sartorius are busy over a game. The Professor. Doctor, if you go on in that way, studying Morphy's games, I shall have no chance whatever against you. You ought to have invited me to go over the games with you; let us have fair play, and study them together next time. The Doctor. It was not with the intention of improving my play that 1 looked over the game; I only wanted to see if that Mr.Thompson, to whom Morphy gives a Knight, is a strong player; but I am convinced, by what I have seen of his games, that he is not so strong as I am, and I would not mind to play a match with him for a good stake. He makes very few blunders, but a great many weak moves, which shows want of Chess talent, and I think any of our first-rate London players could give him the Knight, Harrwitz could, with ease, so could Bibd, Falkbeer, Campbell, and others. The Professor. Is it true that the American Chess Monthly changes? I have heard it reported. The Doctor. It changes editors, at any rate, for it announces that Messrs. Fiske and Morphy retire; although the latter, it seems, only gave his name to the paper. They do not say, however, who will be its future able conductors. You do not know, perhaps, that Anderssen has also retired from the Berlin Schachzeitung; there appears to have been a quarrel between Anderssen and Max Lange, but I do not exactly know what it was about. The Professor. The close of the year brings a good many changes in the Chess world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This was the first book by Reuben Fine and one of the first, if not the very first, by Fred Reinfeld. Both were young men. Fine was 21. Reinfeld was 24. Both went on to become not only strong chess players but prolific writers of books, especially Reinfeld who wrote more than one hundred chess books. Both Fine and Reinfeld became noted authors of books on other subjects as well. Reinfeld wrote more than fifty books on other subjects such as checkers, coin collecting and stamp collecting. Fine wrote college textbooks on psychology and psychoanalysis. Dr. Lasker's Chess Career 1889-1914 has become a rare book, almost impossible to obtain. I bought the book used for this reprint from a collector of rare books in Denmark. The original title was Dr. Lasker's Chess Career, Part I, 1889-1914. This was obviously intended to be the first in a series of books about World Chess Champion Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941). When this book was written, Emanuel Lasker was still alive. However, no other volume of this book was ever written, so the title has been shortened to just Dr. Lasker's Chess Career 1889-1914. Emanuel Lasker burst on the chess scene by winning his first tournament in 1888-1889 at the age of 20. He then won several tournaments and played a series of matches in 1889-1893 against some of the strongest players in the world, winning them all. However, when he challenged the World Chess Champion Wilhelm Steinitz to a match in 1894, it was believed that he stood no chance. The world was shocked when he defeated Steinitz and became World Chess Champion, a title he held for the next 27 years until he lost to Capablanca in 1921.

One can not understand the Sixties without understanding the Fifties. The Fifties were the first time the American youth had excess freedom. Before the 50's they worked on the family farm; dusk till dawn, slaved in the sweat shops, 12 ours a day, six days a week; starved in the depression; and fought not knowing it they would be alive the next day in World War II and the Korean War. Than, suddenly, came the fifties. First there were the beatniks lead by their spiritual leader Williams Burrough, than the "bad boys of rock and roll Elvis, Johnny Cochran, and Jerry Lee Lewis prevailed. This excess freedom, led to freedom to think, freedom to question, freedom to challenge. In the sixties, the peaceful non-violent Civil Rights Movement, progressed to the Black Power and the Black Panthers. The Civil Rights Movement was followed by the creeping involvement in Vietnam, first with military advisors, than massive troop deployments to Vietnam resulting in death, violence, destruction, and then disillusion. And complementing the war, initially, the educational teach-ins led to massive antiwar demonstrations, to the Weathermen busting windows on Michigan Ave and planting bombs in the Capital. This all digressed to the " second civil war" which recently resurfaced with the Iraq War, I afraid now is progressing to the "third civil war". Throughout the book we follow the characters lives from romantic innocence to reality to Expressionism. Some fighting in Vietnam, some protesting the war, some marching for civil rights, friendships destroyed and than repaired. Some lives lost, some destroyed, some survived, but all caught up in the hubris characterized by a gross failure of governmental leadership. Those betrayed the most have their names on a black granite wall in Washington DC.

This is the chess doctor's handbook to the very popular traps and pitfalls faced by beginning and intermediate chess players. Opening traps are the single most annoying stratagem, that is, for unprepared players. This book shows you how to handle these traps as both Black and White and to set the same traps yourself. Schiller and Watson provide practical remedies from both the White and Black perspectives to the annoying variations that opponents will often choose instead of the well-known main lines. For key openings, the authors provide two separate remedies to appeal to both the attacking and positional player. Unique charts and graphics make learning these remedies easy and fun! 266 pages
