Il potere in Italia è stato per quarant’anni l’intreccio tra partiti, grandi imprese e banche. Oggi lo scenario cambia e, nella rottura degli equilibri tra le forze, il Paese si sfalda, mentre le parti politiche si consolidano in strutture di dominio personalistiche. Il potere è ormai allo stato gassoso, in assenza di una classe dirigente capace di tenere insieme la nazione. La magistratura, oltre al dio denaro, sembra essere l’unica forma di potere rimasta, unitamente ai condizionamenti internazionali di una sovranità sempre più limitata, in cui l’egemonia americana è sostituita da quella tedesca. Un saggio di Antonio Pilati riallaccia l’analisi dell’autore alla situazione odierna, ravvisandone una continuità. Chiude il libro la traduzione della lettera aperta del 1996 di Helmut Schmidt, ex-cancelliere tedesco, a Hans Tietmeyer, allora Presidente della Bundesbank: un documento archetipo di un potere statale forte dove si sa chi comanda. In Italia, non è dato saperlo. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.5px Helvetica}

What role does war play in political development? Our understanding of the rise of the nation-state is based heavily on the Western European experience of war. Challenging the dominance of this model, Blood and Debt looks at Latin America's much different experience as more relevant to politics today in regions as varied as the Balkans and sub-Saharan Africa. The book's illuminating review of the relatively peaceful history of Latin America from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries reveals the lack of two critical prerequisites needed for war: a political and military culture oriented toward international violence, and the state institutional capacity to carry it out. Using innovative new data such as tax receipts, naming of streets and public monuments, and conscription records, the author carefully examines how war affected the fiscal development of the state, the creation of national identity, and claims to citizenship. Rather than building nation-states and fostering democratic citizenship, he shows, war in Latin America destroyed institutions, confirmed internal divisions, and killed many without purpose or glory.

1848 written by Mike Rapport and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-03 with History categories.

A "lively, panoramic" history of a revolutionary year (New York Times) In 1848, a violent storm of revolutions ripped through Europe. The torrent all but swept away the conservative order that had kept peace on the continent since Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815 -- but which in many countries had also suppressed dreams of national freedom. Political events so dramatic had not been seen in Europe since the French Revolution, and they would not be witnessed again until 1989, with the revolutions in Eastern and Central Europe. In 1848, historian Mike Rapport examines the roots of the ferment and then, with breathtaking pace, chronicles the explosive spread of violence across Europe. A vivid narrative of a complex chain of interconnected revolutions, 1848 tells the exhilarating story of Europe's violent "Spring of Nations" and traces its reverberations to the present day.
