Excerpt from Chicago City Manual, 1911 The major part of the work done by the bureau is for the Aldermen. Only a few, if any, of the very active members of the Council have failed to give us opportunities of serving them. In the spring of every year, at the annual renewing of the Council, letters have been addressed to the Aldermen, that have reminded some and informed others of the existence of this Bureau and Library and of our readiness to supply them with any and all data that they might require as helps in their aldermanic labors. The majority have not neglected to avail of such helps. And we have throughout the year had satisfaction and pleasure in serving in like manner, teachers, students, the newspapers and members of the various clubs in which civics are pursued. At the same time we have conducted an extended correspondence through the mails/ All the world writes to the Mayor for all sorts of facts of administration, and generally of the city, and hundreds of the great number of letters received by him, and which neither he nor his secretary have time to answer, are referred to the head of this Bureau for attention. Besides there is an unending volume of correspondence carried on here direct with the Mayors and other officials, and with educationists and prominent citizens of other cities in this country and in Europe; and even in China, Japan and Australia; indeed, in most parts of the earth where civilization prevails. We exchange public documents with them all, or nearly all of them. During the last year we have sent off over numbers and have received giving us net perma nent accessions of volumes or preservable pieces. Excerpt from The Chicago City Manual: 1913 "I cannot see any rational or logical ground for the mighty difference in the value which mankind generally set upon the past and future, as if the one was everything, and the other nothing, of no consequence whatever. On the other hand, I conceive that the past is as real and substantial a part of our being, that it is as much a bona fide, undeniable consideration in the estimate of human life, as the future can possibly be. To say that the past is of no importance, unworthy of a moment's regard, because it has gone by, and is no longer anything, is an argument that cannot be held to any purpose: for if the past has ceased to be, and is therefore to be accounted as nothing in the scale of good or evil, the future is yet to come, and has never been anything. Should any one choose to assert that the present only is of any value in a strict and positive sense, because that alone has a real existence, that we should seize the instant good, and give all else to the winds, I can understand what he means; but I cannot comprehend how this distinction between that which has a downright and sensible, and that which has a downright and sensible, and that which has only a remote and airy existence, can be applied to establish the preference of the future over the past; for both are in this point of view equally ideal, absolutely nothing, except as they are conceived of by the mind's eye, and are thus rendered present to the thoughts and feelings. Nay, the one is even more imaginary, a more fantastic creature of the brain than the other, and the interest we take in it more shadowry and gratuitous; for the future, on which we lay so much stress, may never come to pass at all, that is, may never be embodied into actual existence once, has received the stamp of truth, and left an image of itself behind. It is not, however, attempted to be denied that though the future is nothing at present, and has no immediate interest while we are speaking, yet it is of the utmost consequence in itself, and of the utmost interest to the individual, because it will have a real existence, and we have an idea of it as existing in time to come. Well, then, the past also has no real existence; the actual sensation and the interest belonging to it are both fled; but it has had a real existence, and we can still call up a vivid recollection of it as having once been." Excerpt from Chicago City Manual, 1914 The name, Lake Park, for the at last dedicated recreation and pleasure grounds, was almost immediately changed for that it still bears - Lincoln Park. On June 5, 1865, Alderman Lawson presented to the Common Council and had at once passed the following resolution Whereas, there appears by the records of the city that there are now two public parks designated by the name Lake Park Therefore, be it resolved that the park recently set apart from the unoccupied portion of the old cemetery grounds shall hereafter be known and designated as Lincoln Park. Alderman Iver Lawson, who presented this resolution, was from the old Fifteenth Ward. He was the father of the present Victor Lawson, editor and publisher of the Chicago Daily News. Excerpt from The Chicago City Manual: Containing a List of the Executive and Other City Officers, With Descriptions of Their Duties; Lists of the Aldermen and of the Committees of the City Council and the Rules Regulating That Body Much of the work currently executed by the Bureau of Statistics is somewhat like that performed by the legislative reference departments of the two states named above. But owing to the great lack in the present working facilities of this bureau, but principally to the absence of a suitable organization, at once comprehensive and harmonious, and efficiently directed by a competent head, the field of past and present labors is deplorably limited. A new Department of Information and Publicity, which it is proposed to add to the departments of administra tion (the ordinance for creating which is now pending in the City Coun cil), is designed to provide for the city an organization such as is greatly needed; one that shall be the best of the most approved kind. The cost of it can be but trifling in comparison with the enormous amounts of money to be involved in proposed public works and improvements, which from time to time will be subjects of special researches with which the Commissioner of Information and Publicity will be charged. What might our cities look like in ten, twenty or fifty years? How may future cities face global challenges? Imagining the city of the future has long been an inspiration for many architects, artists and designers. This book examines how cities of the future have been visualised, what these projects sought to communicate and what the implications may be for us now. It provides a visual history of the future and explores the relationships between different visualisation techniques and ideologies for cities. Thinking about what futures are, who they are for, why they are desirable, and how and when they are to be brought into being is central to this book. Through visualisation we are able to experiment in ways that would be impractical and potentially hazardous in the real world, and this book, therefore, aims to contribute toward a better understanding of the power and agency of visualisations for future cities.
