The International Symposium on "The Use of Space by Animals and Men," sponsored by the Animal Behavior Society, took place at the 135th Annual Meeting of the AAAS in Dallas, Texas, on December 29-31, 1968. This book presents the text of all papers and edited discus sions, as well as the contributions made by several individuals who were unable ·to attend the Symposium. The idea of holding the Symposium evolved following my presenta tion of a paper to the Animal Behavior Society in 1965 [2] on the use of space by psychiatric patients. Members in attendance at that ses sion, chaired by G. Gottlieb, shared his interest in my compilation of human data presented in a measurable spatial context. This plea sant experience persuaded me that a discussion of space might be shared as a frame of reference which could open avenues of communica tion between behavioral scientists, the design community, and the de cision makers in our society.

Chicago is home to the second-largest Mexican immigrant population in the United States, yet the activities of this community have gone relatively unexamined by both the media and academia. In this groundbreaking new book, Xóchitl Bada takes us inside one of the most vital parts of Chicago’s Mexican immigrant community—its many hometown associations. Hometown associations (HTAs) consist of immigrants from the same town in Mexico and often begin quite informally, as soccer clubs or prayer groups. As Bada’s work shows, however, HTAs have become a powerful force for change, advocating for Mexican immigrants in the United States while also working to improve living conditions in their communities of origin. Focusing on a group of HTAs founded by immigrants from the state of Michoacán, the book shows how their activism has bridged public and private spheres, mobilizing social reforms in both inner-city Chicago and rural Mexico. Bringing together ethnography, political theory, and archival research, Bada excavates the surprisingly long history of Chicago’s HTAs, dating back to the 1920s, then traces the emergence of new models of community activism in the twenty-first century. It has become fashionable to assume that concerted action to bring about social reform is a waste of time. If we are to move beyond the current laments about how nothing works anymore, we must view the reform process from the perspective of the community groups involved-those who make it work or fail-and understand how and why they behave as they do. "Social Construction of Reform "is an analysis of the activities of community groups who used Ford Foundation funding to prevent crime. The authors ask: What are the goals of the community groups who are involved in the reform? What are they trying to accomplish with their participation in the program? Are their goals synonymous with those who fund and evaluate the activity? The authors begin by analyzing the implementation of the grant by the groups involved. They describe the origins of the group's planned intervention, the nature of what is called community crime prevention, and then they examine the impact of external funding on community organizations as a generic issue. They take a careful look at what the groups did with the Foundation's support, to understand how well the groups' crime prevention strategy they employed supported their ideology. The block watch is examined in detail as the tactic most often employed. The authors conclude with observations on what success and failure mean in the context of the findings reported, offering a better understanding of reforms and new criteria to assess their effectiveness.
