This book explores in detail the concept of homelessness by examining the dynamics of shelter living and the financial costs in comparison to the psychological costs to the children and the family. A comparison is made with housed low-income families to highlight the fact that homelessness, outside of poverty, does play a key role in the negative outcomes of homeless children and families. Psychological well-being is defined with behavioral outcomes and self-concept while family functioning is defined with parenting dimensions, family environment and social supports. Sharing the daily struggles of children and families residing in transitional situations (homelessness or because of risk of homelessness, being connected with the child welfare system, or being new immigrants in temporary housing), this text recommends strategies for delivering mental health and intensive case-management services that maintain family integrity and stability. Based on work undertaken at the Center for the Vulnerable Child in Oakland, California, which has provided mental health and intensive case management to children and families living in transition for more than two decades, this volume outlines culturally sensitive practices to engage families that feel disrespected by the assistance of helping professionals or betrayed by their forgotten promises. Chapters discuss the Center's staffers' attempt to trace the influence of power, privilege, and beliefs on their education and their approach to treatment. Many U.S. children living in impoverished transitional situations are of color and come from generations of poverty, and the professionals they encounter are white, middle-class, and college-educated. The Center's work to identify the influences or obstacles interfering with services for this target population is therefore critical to formulating more effective treatment, interaction, and care.

An increasing number of families are becoming homeless, often as a result of domestic violence, which leaves women and their school age children without homes. This multidisciplinary volume is the first to look at the variety of problems encountered by this group and to propose strategies for managing those problems. The contributors to this book provide evidence that homeless children often have more acute problems and needs than other children; as a result of the insecurity of their situation, they may experience physical health problems and developmental delay. They are also at high risk of emotional and behavioural difficulties such as sleep disturbance, eating problems, aggression, over-activity, anxiety, depression and self-harm. At the same time, due to their unstable situation, they are less able to access support from the health, education and social services. Homeless Children defines the specific problems and needs of homeless children, and draws up practical guidelines for staff and agencies on recognising and dealing with those problems. It then looks at policy and service development for homeless families in education, health and social care, and concludes that conventional methods of provision have to be adapted to meet the specific needs of this vulnerable group.

Experiences of homelessness and housing instability have implications for child and family well-being across the life course. In this three-paper dissertation, I explore a variety of housing experiences for families within additionally stressful contexts. First, I review the existing literature regarding infants' and toddlers' experiences of homelessness, a consequential developmental time period, and a critical gap in homelessness scholarship. Second, using qualitative analyses, I investigate families' descriptions of their experiences of housing instability and homelessness in addition to experiencing the incarceration of a parent, addressing family-identified challenges and supports. Lastly, I address relations between parents' well-being and children's stress within families living doubled-up during the COVID-19 pandemic, comparing across doubled-up status for parent mental health symptoms, emotions, behaviors, and employment, and child stress and adaptive behaviors. Following the three papers, I discuss implications for future research, policy, and practice within the field of family homelessness and housing instability.
