Child Care in the Family: A Review of Research and Some Propositions for Policy reviews the research on family influence on children's development and of the implications of the research for policy. This book is organized into two parts encompassing six chapters. The first part surveys the influence of the characteristics and behavior of family members on child's psychological development. This part focuses on "normal" children in "typical" families in America. The second part deals with the assumptions, inferences, simplifications, and generalizations made in psychological research to develop policy propositions concerning childcare. This book will be of great value to child psychologists, behaviorists, family counselors, and researchers.

A new type of childhood is experienced these days by many children in industrial societies that provide child care services. The studies summarized in this book stem from a conceptual model based on an ecological approach to the study of development. The family day care system in Israel is presented as a "case study" for the discussion of issues derived from this conceptual model -- issues which are of central concern to the investigation of child care in any society. This book establishes how historical and socio-economic processes: *influence the values and goals set by the society for its children, and its social policy concerning child care service; *are interpreted by parents and early childhood educators; *relate to different definitions of "quality care." Unique in its integrative analysis of the daily experiences of infants and toddlers in family day care, this volume examines cultural and social policy issues, family background and parental beliefs, caregiver's background and beliefs, the nature of the child care environment, and the child's personal characteristics. Its "theoretical" and "applied" orientation is important to researchers interested in the study of out-of-home-care for young children, as well as educators, developmental psychologists, sociologists, and social workers interested in the study of environmental influences on the child development. The ecological model and the applied implications of the study are of special relevance to practitioners in the field of early childhood.

From the universally admired author of the bestselling classic Your Baby and Child: “a masterful work [that could] revolutionize the way America cares for its young children and bring about a radical improvement in the lives of children and their parents” (The Boston Globe). Who is caring for today’s children? How well are they succeeding? What does care cost, and who is paying for it? Leach answers these and other urgent questions with facts and figures gathered from the most current research, brought to life by the voices of parents, including those involved in her own five-year study. She highlights the urgent need in America today for measures to raise the quality of child care and to make the best care we can provide available to all families, just as it is in most other developed nations. Setting out clearly and candidly what is known about every aspect of child care—including the often hidden feelings and fears of parents—Leach presents a critical case for change.

This report on European developments in infant and toddler care services was prepared to help define issues and options for the improvement and expansion of infant and toddler care and family support systems in the United States. Introductory comments suggest that advanced industrialized countries have almost unanimously elected universal but voluntary preschool for children for various stated purposes. The report next focuses on six countries whose experiences are most relevant to the United States, providing an overview of child care coverage and options, administration, costs, educational philosophy, staffing, and family support services. Detailed profiles of specific schools, programs, or initiatives are also included. Highlighted findings include the following: (1) Denmark has the highest coverage of child care provision for children under age 3 in Western Europe, combining center care and family day care of high quality; (2) in France, services for children under age 3 are under health auspices, while its preschool program service for children aged 2 to 5 years is under education auspices, and family support services are emerging out of this base as a universal program; (3) Italy has almost all of its 3- to 5-year-olds enrolled in preschool, but has only limited coverage for children under age 3; (4) Finland and Sweden, in systems covering all children to age 7, have pioneered parental at-home options for infant care, while also legislating a right to a guaranteed child care place; and (5) England has the smallest proportion of very young children in out-of-home child care.
