This study explores the childhood experience of a national sample of 2869 18-24 year-olds in the UK, including their experience of abuse and neglect. It reviews such issues as the defining and measuring of maltreatment. It gives prevalence figures for physical and sexual abuse, emotional maltreatment, absence of physical care, absence of supervision and bullying by other children. The findings carry serious implications for the UK's child protection system.

Each of these parts contains a table summarizing the studies with respect to such matters as country of study, type of abuse, information source, sampling & data collection method, and results. The final part contains annotated citations of studies based on information from child abuse registries. Within each section, citations are arranged by geographic area covered.

This collection focuses on child welfare in its specific sense: welfare and social interventions with children and young people undertaken by State bodies or NGO's. The term 'child welfare' is deployed differently in diverse international settings. In the United Kingdom child welfare tends to refer to individualised programmes for children who have experienced problems in their lives. In India, to take a contrasting example, it can also refer to major housing and nutrition programmes. This collection takes an inclusive approach to international perspectives. The collection is completed by a new general introduction by the editor, individual volume introductions, and a full index.Titles also available in this series include, Medical Sociology (November 2004, 4 Volumes, 495) and the forthcoming collection Health Care Systems (2005, 3 Volumes, c.395).

This data-rich volume reviews short- and long-term consequences of residential or institutional care for children across the globe as well as approaches to reducing maltreatment. Up-to-date findings from a wide range of developing and developed countries identify forms of abuse and neglect associated with institutionalization and their effects on development and pathology in younger children, adolescents, and alumni. The sections on intervention strategies highlight the often-conflicting objectives facing professionals and policymakers balancing the interests of children, families, and facilities. But despite many national and regional variations, two themes stand out: the universal right of children to live in safety, and the ongoing need for professionals and community to ensure this safety. Included among the topics: Maltreatment and living conditions in long-term residential institutions for children Outcomes from institutional rearing Recommendations to improve institutional living Historical, political, socio-economic, and cultural influences on Child Welfare Systems Latin American and the Caribbean, African, Asian, Middle-Eastern, Western and Eastern European countries and the United States of America are presented. Child Maltreatment in Residential Care will inform psychology professionals interested in the role of residential care in the lives of children, and possibilities for improved outcomes. It will also interest social workers and mental health practitioners and researchers seeking evidence-based interventions for families adopting children from residential care.

This report represents the first ever attempt to draw a comparative picture of the physical abuse of children in the 27 richest nations of the world. Estimates indicate that almost 3,500 children under the age of 15 years die from physical abuse and neglect every year in the industrialised world, although the number of deaths from maltreatment appears to be generally declining. The greatest risk of death through abuse is found to be among younger children, particularly those under one year old. The lowest incident rates are found in countries such as Spain, Greece, Italy, Ireland and Norway, whilst the highest levels are in the United States, Mexico and Portugal. Generally, the rates of child deaths from maltreatment appears to mirror that of adult death rates from assault. Poverty and stress, along with drug and alcohol abuse, are key factors associated with child abuse and neglect.
