These essays in this book are pastoral and scholarly, to encourage parents to nurture and foster Christian family life by learning from scripture and history. The Bible, in both testaments, offers us stories that provide moral and spiritual substance to the nurture of the child and the family. Beginning with the mythopoetic story of Adam and Eve, and the fratricide of Abel by the envy of Cain, the stories of the sacrifices parents made, then moving on to the stories of Abraham and Isaac, Ruth and her mother-in-law, Hannah and her son Samuel, Jeremiah the child prophet, these stories form our moral imaginations. Further, for Christians, they all augur the promise of the Incarnation, with the birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. Then through the history of the Church the role of the Child is further unfolded. It begins with Jesus teaching that to be as one of his disciples is to be a child. This is so radical that the subsequent churches have found it hard to follow. Perhaps one symbolic attempt was that of the monks' cowl which is a child's garment, and still worn in their monasteries. The book even explores the way that Christian maturity is one of childlikeness.

'Looking through the eyes of a child is not a twee, cosy or easy experience. It can be unsettling, uncomfortable, edgy...' - from the Introduction Who has the right to 'do' theology? Only academics? Only adults? Or do we all have a voice in the kingdom of God? Through the Eyes of a Child considers 14 key theological themes from one of the most neglected of perspectives - that of children. Honouring Jesus' command to place the child at the centre, theologians, psychologists and educationalists take us from our comfort zone to look afresh at some of the most grave, difficult and beautiful topics in Christian theology. Challenging conventional readings of theology, this landmark work will fascinate and challenge anyone who cares about children and their place in the world and the church.

The purpose of this book is to combine perspectives of scholars from Africa on Child Theologies from a variety of theological sub-disciplines to provide some theological and ministerial perspectives on this topic. The book disseminates original research and new developments in this study field, especially as relevant to the African context. In the process it addresses also the global need to hear voices from Africa in this academic field. It wants to convey the importance of considering Africa’s children in theologising. The different chapters represent diverse methodologies but the central and common focus is to approach the subject from the viewpoint of Africa’s children. The individual authors’ varied theological sub-disciplinary dispositions contribute to the unique and distinct character of the book. Almost all chapters are theoretical orientated with less empirical research, although some of the chapters refer to empirical research which the authors have done in the past. Most of the academic literature in the field of Theologies of Childhood is from American or British- European origin. The African context is fairly absent in this discourse, although it is the youngest continent and presents unique and relevant challenges. This book was written by theological scholars from Africa, focussing on Africa’s children. It addresses not only theoretical challenges in this field but also provides theological perspectives for ministry with children and for important social change. Written from a variety of theological sub-disciplines, the book is aimed at scholars across theological sub- disciplines, especially those theological scholars interested in the intersections between theology, childhood studies and African cultural or social themes. It addresses themes and provide insights that is also relevant for specialist leaders and professionals in this field. No part of the book was plagiarised from another publication or published elsewhere before.

This ground-breaking volume of 16 contributions from leading child theologians, mission theologians and practitioners examines the constructive interaction of Theology, Mission and Child in fresh and intriguing ways. It is moving, profound, and practical, proposing not just ways theology can better inform mission praxis, particularly with children, but also ways 'child' can inform our understanding of God, God's mission, and ours. A vital resource for academics or non-academics, theologians, mission practitioners and Christians involved with children, this unique addition to the Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series will interest anyone concerned with the challenges of life and mission in light of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus. This seminal work helps break the barriers between theology and mission while focusing attention on children in our many contexts. The reader is drawn into the darkness and evil in which so many children are caught, then led through a journey with Christ offering hope, reconciliation and redemption. It confronts us with the question, 'Will we stand with the child in the midst (Mt 18:1-9) and therefore stand with Jesus in his kingdom?' -Rev Dr Geoff Tunnicliffe, Secretary General and CEO of the World Evangelical Alliance People engaged with children, especially vulnerable children, rarely have time for theological or missiological reflection. Those traveling the various thoroughfares of theology or mission have not typically slowed to notice the child. Uniquely and thoughtfully, this book puts mission, theology and child in creative tension, provoking an imaginative yet demanding exploration of each, at every point in relation to the other two. -Dr Dan Brewster, Director for Academic Programs for Compassion International By employing a Triangle formed by 'Theology', 'Mission' and 'Child' this book will provide fresh impetus for theology, practice, and hermeneutical approaches based on Jesus placing a child in the midst of his disciples. Readers will find new ways of thinking simply because 'Child' is made one of the points in this Triangle. -Dr Sunny Tan, Associate Dean and Lecturer at the Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary Bill Prevette (PhD, OCMS/Wales University) is the director of Practitioner Research with the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies. He specializes in Missiology and work with at-risk women, youth and children. Bill has worked for the last 30 years in Thailand, Cambodia, Romania and now resides in Oxford with his wife Ky. Keith J. White lives at Mill Grove, studied at Oxford and Edinburgh, has lectured on six continents, chairs the Child Theology Movement, and his most recent book (with H Willmer) is Entry Point: Towards Child Theology with Matthew 18. C. Rosalee Velloso Ewell (PhD, Duke University) is a Brazilian theologian from Sao Paulo. She currently serves as Executive Director of the Theological Commission for the World Evangelical Alliance. DJ Konz is a Director of the global Child Theology Movement and lives with his family near Aberdeen, Scotland, where he is researching the relation of 'child' to God's mission. He was formerly the Executive Director of Child Advocacy for Compassion Australia.

Children And The Theologians written by Jerome W. Berryman and has been published by Church Publishing, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09 with Religion categories.

The long story of children in theology is told via analysis of some twenty-five theologians, grouped according to six historical periods. Each account examines what a particular theologian thought about children and the experience it was based upon. Four themes that have shaped our attitudes about children in the church emerge from this history: ambivalence, ambiguity, indifference, and grace. The result of this study is to promote a healthier church, which will respect and utilize the distinctive gifts of children. In so doing, theologians will be better able to help clear the way for grace in the postmodern church.
