An increasing number of people in our country today acknowledge the fact that there is an enormous crisis in the field of early child care. The first chapter of this book examines the major reasons for the crisis and why the economic reality for most American households will cause the problem to continue to grow in the coming years. Following this, the second chapter discusses the criteria of a good early child care setup, based on professional literature in the field and the author's experience. The remainder of the book addresses the serious problem that most day-care workers are very poorly trained for their jobs. Six chapters are devoted to providing a practical guide for people who work with young children. They discuss, from current research in the field but without using technical language, current practical methods of working with children-at-risk or those who may potentially be at-risk. The focus is on working with children in groups, helping day-care workers and substitute parents to minimize or remediate the at-risk factor in the children in their care. The book also addresses parents of these children and emphasizes the need for cooperation between day-care workers and them so that child care providers can effectively convey the skills presented here. There is also a chapter on approaches to working with special children, such as children with autism, and those with physical or neurological impairments. In Zambia, due to the rise of tuberculosis and the closely connected HIV epidemic, a large number of children have experienced the illness or death of at least one parent. Children as Caregivers examines how well intentioned practitioners fail to realize that children take on active caregiving roles when their guardians become seriously ill and demonstrates why understanding children’s care is crucial for global health policy. Using ethnographic methods, and listening to the voices of the young as well as adults, Jean Hunleth makes the caregiving work of children visible. She shows how children actively seek to “get closer” to ill guardians by providing good care. Both children and ill adults define good care as attentiveness of the young to adults’ physical needs, the ability to carry out treatment and medication programs in the home, and above all, the need to maintain physical closeness and proximity. Children understand that losing their guardians will not only be emotionally devastating, but that such loss is likely to set them adrift in Zambian society, where education and advancement depend on maintaining familial, reciprocal relationships. Parents who care for children with special needs, particularly those whose children have multiple disabilities or intellectual delays, are pioneers in home health care and caregiving, yet their experience and expertise are rarely recognized. This book collects parent narratives, personal experience, and academic research to portray the lives of parent caregivers, looking at both the trials and the triumphs inherent in raising a child with special needs. Parents raising children with special needs often must devote all of their resources, both tangible and spiritual, to providing care long into their offspring's lives. Their experience exceeds the usual parameters of parenting. This book examines all of the facets of their parenting role, the care they provide, challenges they face, and questions many assumptions. It presents parents as neither emotional wrecks nor overburdened saints, but as moral individuals struggling to find their own way through relatively unexplored territory. This book begins to recognize the moral consequences of providing long-term care for a child with complex needs. Using a virtue ethic framework isolates the various tasks involved, and evaluates the moral demands placed on the parent attempting to perform them. On their journey to provide for their child the best life possible, parents must alter their own lives and attitudes, and become the sort of person who can perform the necessary caregiving. Raising a child with special needs demands from the parent a reassessment of their personal and social lives. Some of the consequences, such as the presumed emotional and physical burden of constant attentiveness and the numerous unexpected responsibilities, have been reported previously. But the need for competence, which drives an acquisition of medical knowledge, has not previously been analyzed, nor has there been recognition of the enormous moral task of encouraging identity formation in a child with intellectual delays or disabilities. For a child who cannot attain independence, parents must continue to provide care and support into an uncertain future.

This book explores the effects of China’s one child policy on modern Chinese families. It is widely thought that such a policy has contributed to the creation of a generation of little emperors or little suns spoiled by their parents and by the grandparents who have been recruited to care for the child while the middle generation goes off to work. Investigating what life is really like with three generations in close quarters and using urban Xiamen as a backdrop, the author shows how viewing the grandparents and parents as engaged in an intergenerational parenting coalition allows for a more dynamic understanding of both the pleasures and conflicts within adult relationships, particularly when they are centred around raising a child. Based on both survey data and ethnographic fieldwork, the book also makes it clear that parenting is only half the story. The children, of course, are the other. Moreover, these children not only have agency, but constantly put it to work as a way to displace the burden of expectations and steady attention that comes with being an only child in contemporary urban China. These ‘lone tacticians’, as Goh calls them, are not having an easy time and not all are living like spoiled children. The reality is far more challenging for all three generations. The book will be of interest to those in family studies, education, psychology, sociology, Asian Studies, and social work.
