"...SIR,--I learn with great regret, through an extract from the columns of your paper, that the warder Martin, of Reading Prison, has been dismissed by the Prison Commissioners for having given some sweet biscuits to a little hungry child. I saw the three children myself on the Monday preceding my release. They had just been convicted, and were standing in a row in the central hall in their prison dress, carrying their sheets under the arms previous to their being sent to the cells allotted to them. I happened to be passing along one of the galleries on my way to the reception room, where I was to have an interview with a friend...."

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Children in Prison and Other Cruelties of Prison Life, was published by the novelist and poet Oscar Wilde as an attempt to discover what he considered the scandal of child prisoners incarcerated in British prisons. The pamphlet, first published in the form of a letter to the editor of the Daily Chronicle in 1897, was written after Wilde was released from Reading prison: he had served a sentence for sexual offenses. During his time as a prisoner, Wilde had observed many young men locked up with adult criminals, whose corrupting influence he believed would lead children to a life of greater crime. For young people, adult jails were the cause of "sheer terror." Many children were locked up in the dark for 23 hours each day, feeding only on water and 'poorly baked' bread.Wilde was particularly outraged by the treatment received by a prison guard, Thomas Martin, who was fired from his post for offering a cookie to a boy who was "crying with hunger." In Wilde's opinion, such treatment was inhumane, and he advocated that no child be incarcerated for any reason if he was under the age of 14. Oscar Wilde (October 16, 1854 - November 30, 1900)

"Children in Prison and Other Cruelties of Prison Life" by Oscar Wilde is a letter that was written by the author to the editor of the London Daily Chronicle. Wilde states about child cruelty in prison and makes the argument that children under the age of 14 must not be imprisoned, implying that there were children under the age of 14 in prison with him. He writes a few stories about the gentleness of the recently fired prison guard. He explains why cruelty is tolerated in prison but kindness is not.

Excerpt from Children in Prison and Other Cruelties of Prison Life The present treatment of children is terrible, primarily from people not understanding the peculiar psychology of a child's nature. A child can understand a punishment inflicted by an individual, such as a parent or guardian, and bear it with a certain amount of acquiescence. What it cannot understand is a punish ment inflicted by Sopiety. It cannot realise what Society is. With grown people it is, of course, the reverse. Those of us who are either in prison or have been sent there, can understand, and do understand, what that collective force called Society means, and whatever we may think of its methods or claims, we can force ourselves to accept it. Punishment inflicted on us by an individual, on the other hand, is a thing that no grown person endures or is expected to endure. "Incarceration often has a quiet, overwhelming impact on children. Visiting a prison, particularly for the first time, can be frightening and cause much anxiety to a child. After witnessing the effects of prison visits on children first-hand, author Rebecca Myers falls back on her 35-year career in early childhood education as she carefully explains the complicated visiting process in words children can understand. Her text is supported by the beautiful illustrations of John Crews. This is a book that should definitely be in the hands of every child whose life is irrevocably affected by incarceration." -- cover.

Justice, it is said, is about acquitting the innocent and punishing the guilty. Why then, asks Roger Shaw, are the children of imprisoned parents often penalised the most? The abuse, stigma and neglect experienced by many of these children raise serious questions about the nature of criminal justice. Originally published in 1992, Prisoners’ Children provides the first in-depth look at these hidden victims of crime and examines ways in which the harm can be reduced. The contributors – a wide range of leading practitioners and academics in the field – address such diverse issues as the psychological impact of parental incarceration on children, the added problem of racism facing black children and their families, and the particular needs of mothers and babies in prison. Prisoners’ Children is a major resource for anyone who needs to know what can be done to confront these and other issues within prisons, the probation service, and schools.
