After Steve Fenton's 6-year-old son is taken to Mexico and held illegally by his mother, Fenton is awarded custody by California courts. Then begins a months-long battle in which lawyers and diplomats on both sides of the border try enforce the U.S. custody order. Under an international treaty to which both countries are a party, the Hague Convention, Mexican federal authorities make half-hearted attempts to recover the child. When it becomes clear that legal means will never bring the boy home, Fenton takes matters into his own hands. Posing as tourists, he and a world renowned specialist in recovering missing children execute a plan that involves taking the missing boy from a school bus, and, after various car changes, flying out of Mexico in a single-engine plane after filing a false flight plan. Mexican officials apparently can move fast when they want to and when the plane landed in Brownsville, the Fenton and his son were soon met by the FBI and a Mexican consular official. The Mexicans very nearly had the boy returned after telling the FBI that automatic weapons were used to attack the school bus, that the plane had been commandeered and that the custody documents from California were false. This is the story of the rescue, of useless government bureacrats on both sides of the border, and how the father and son and his then-fugitive mother dealt with the aftermath.
