*** Highly commended in the Public Health Category of the British Medical Association Book Competition 2005*** Every child has the right to live in a healthy supportive environment - an environment that encourages growth and development and protects from disease. Many of the world s children however are exposed to hazards in the very places that should be safest - the home school and community. Considering that their growing bodies are particularly sensitive to environmental threats the final burden of childhood disease is substantial. Every year more than three million children die due to unhealthy environments. This atlas articulates where and why more than three million children die every year due to unhealthy environments. It tackles issues as diverse as the devastating and largely unknown impact of indoor air pollution the unfashionable tragedy of sanitation and complex emerging issues like climate change. Full-color maps and graphics clearly demonstrate the threats that children face everywhere and underscore the impact of poverty on children s health. While this crisis cannot be ignored and demands urgent action success stories such as the Montreal Protocol show a way forward for the world to make sure that our children will inherit a safer planet and a brighter future.

This is the first textbook to focus on environmental threats to child health. It will interest professionals and graduate students in public health, pediatrics, environmental health, epidemiology, and toxicology. The first three chapters provide overviews of key children's environmental health issues as well as the role of environmental epidemiology and risk assessment in child health protection. Overarching themes are the susceptibility of the rapidly developing fetus and infant to environmental toxicants, the importance of modifying factors(e.g. poverty, genetic traits, nutrition), the role of health outcome and exposure monitoring, uncertainties surrounding environmental exposure limits, and the importance of timely intervention. Later chapters address the health effects of metals, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides, hormonally active agents, radiation, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and water contaminants. In analyzing potential environmental hazards, the author addresses both biologic and epidemiologic evidence, including the likelihood of causal relationships. Among the health outcomes he discusses are developmental, reproductive, and neurobehavioral effects, respiratory disease, cancer, and waterborne infectious diseases. These discussions cover environmental exposure sources/indicators, interventions, and standards, and conclude with a summary of calls for an improved science base to guide public health decisions and protect child health.

The Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, organized by WHO/Europe and hosted by Italy, is the latest milestone in the European environment and health process, now in its twentieth year. Focused on protecting children's health in a changing environment, the Conference set Europe's agenda on emerging environmental health challenges for the years to come. The Parma Declaration is the first time-bound outcome of the environment and health process. The 53 Member States in the WHO European Region set clear targets to reduce the harm to health from environmental threats in the next decade. Safe urban settings, locally sourced food and use of ecomaterials contributed to the first ever low-carbon-footprint conference on environment and health organized by WHO/Europe. More than ever, children's health is at risk from a changing environment. The health effects of environmental risk factors - inadequate water and sanitation, unsafe home and recreational environments, lack of spatial planning for physical activity, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and hazardous chemicals - are amplified by recent developments such as financial constraints, broader socioeconomic and gender inequalities and more frequent extreme climate events. They pose new challenges for health systems to reduce deaths and diseases through effective environmental health interventions.
