This article summarises the findings of two Building Research Station studies on this subject. Among the more significant findings are that the large, central 'adventure playground' may complement but is no substitute for the small playground on each estate; that there is a need to cater as much for inactive as for active kinds of play; and that the basis of assessment of space per child, given by the Parker Morris report, should be amended to cost per child.

Children's play is an assessment of the problems that arise through the use children make of the modern urban environment. The study draws its material from three complementary approaches. It presents a Neighbourhood study of two contrasting areas, one of which was built within the last seven years and the other at the turn of the century. This study of the old and new gives hints of emerging problems as well as showing what is happening while we wait for changes. Both mothers and children were surveyed, the demands of the former and the activities of the latter reflecting the two conflicting neighbourhoods. The second aspect is a survey of 152 playgrounds from different local authority areas. Thirdly, it has surveyed the existing facilities for children's play in 20 different local authority areas, showing particularly the diversity of responsability for provision. The comparative attractiveness of the playground is examined in terms of how far children will travel to get to a playground, its popularity, the diversity of its equipment, its size and its environmental setting. From the study conclusions are drawn that are of interest to the town planner, the local authority, school teachers and all parents.
