This monograph discusses the state of the art in child second language acquisition research. It is of particular interest to teachers, administrators, and others concerned with educating children whose first language is not English. The first chapter deals with preschool second language acquisition. It examines processes of acquiring the sound system, the meaning system, the rules for language use, the developmental stages in acquisition, and the differences between first and second language learning in preschool children. Chapter 2 treats second language acquisition in the classroom. It examines the nature of the school experience and how the language of the school differs from language used outside the classroom. Bilingual education programs in Canada and in the United States are compared and various types of U.S. bilingual programs are discussed in order to specify the various instructional and interactional features that differentiate bilingual classrooms. The third chapter describes ways in which researchers have investigated second language acquisition. The major research areas are studies of the second language-learning process, the question of language assessment, and research on the effectiveness of bilingual education. Each chapter contains suggestions for further reading. (Author/AMH)

Researchers from diverse disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, and speech-language pathology contributed to the book that thus represents an effort to integrate multiple views and perspectives. This new volume of work highlights the distinctiveness of child SLA through a collection of different types of empirical research specific to younger learners. Characteristics of children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development distinguish their experiences from those of adult L2 learners, creating intriguing issues for SLA research, and also raising important practical questions regarding effective pedagogical techniques for learners of different ages. While child SLA is often typically thought of as simple (and often enjoyable and universally effortless), in other words, as “child’s play”, the complex portraits of young second language learners which emerge in the 16 papers collected in this book invite the reader to reconsider the reality for many younger learners. Chapters by internationally renowned authors together with reports by emerging researchers describe second and foreign language learning by children ranging from pre-schoolers to young adolescents, in home and school contexts, with caregivers, peers, and teachers as interlocutors.

A detailed exploration of second language learning in the early school years, providing a broad overview of research findings across a range of different contexts. At a time when children around the world are increasingly required to learn a second language in the primary classroom, Second Language Learning in the Early School Years: Trends and Contexts provides a much-needed overview of current themes and research on child second language learning. This bookprovides a detailed exploration of L2 language learning in the early years, examining past and present research evidence on bilingualism, second language, and foreign language learning in childhood, and providing a broad overview of research findings across a range of different contexts. Thediscussion focuses on learning contexts that intersect with educational provision in the early school years and a comparison of L2 outcomes across those contexts.Murphy discusses current trends towards a younger starting age for foreign language learning. She evaluates to what extent 'younger is better' in L2 learning in the early school years, and what other variables may contribute to successful child L2 outcomes. Reviewing the research, Second LanguageLearning in the Early School Years: Trends and Contexts argues that young children can learn multiple languages without adverse effect on their overall language development in any of their languages. This book is part of the Oxford Applied Linguistics Series, a series of titles providing thorough yet accessible coverage of controversial topics related to language use. The goal of the series is to influence the quality of language education through publishing and disseminating relevantscholarship and research.Additional material is available on the website: www.oup.com/elt/teacher/sllearly

Butler and Huang’s book is one of the first to focus on second language (L2) development research methods and techniques specifically targeted at children of primary and pre-primary years. The last decade has seen a growing number of L2 studies of children aged 4–12, a demographic with special developmental characteristics that confound research methods designed for studying adults. Written by experts from a variety of disciplines, this book covers major research methods and techniques in existing L2 development research, including observations, surveys, interviews, introspective methods, speech production methods, receptive methods, eye tracking, and brain imaging, as well as research methods specifically designed for L2 children with special educational needs. The book also discusses various age-related considerations and challenges if they are employed to young L2 learners. This will be essential reading for SLA, child development, and TESOL researchers, and students in these courses will benefit particularly from pedagogical material such as further readings and discussion questions.

Child Second Language Acquisition written by Sonia Rocca and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

As one of the first books in child second language acquisition (SLA), this book focuses on the core area of tense-aspect morphology, reporting on three L1-Italian children learning L2 English vs. three L1-English children learning L2 Italian. An innovative longitudinal/bidirectional research design, where two languages represent both source and target, show effects of language transfer in learners that, because of their age, still have potential to become native-speakers of the target. An unusual feature of this book is that relevant studies of acquisition of L2 Italian, some heretofore only in Italian, are reviewed, incorporated into the study and made available to a more general audience. Though the main focus is on child SLA, crucial comparisons to both first language acquisition vs. adult SLA are presented. This approach will thus be of interest more generally to readers in first and second language acquisition and child development.
